NICK VASALLO "BLACK SWAN EVENTS" THRASH METAL CONCERTO

This is something you can't miss!

Dr. Vasallo is any die hard metal / music fan’s dream come true. The man is a doctor of music and a critically acclaimed composer of classical music that is played worldwide. What more can you ask for? After a couple albums of his solo work, Nick helped form, and handles the vocals in, the band Oblivion. You can read our very positive review of Oblivion’s debut “Called to Rise” album here.

A bit back, Dr. Vasallo released the internet premiere a new opus (Thrash Metal concerto) for electric guitar, drumset, and orchestra. The electric guitar and drumset were be performed by Victor Dods and Luis Martinez of Oblivion. The orchestra consisted of various members of the SF Bay Area, and was filmed at The Crowden Music Center in Berkeley, CA. This is truly the first of its kind since this isn't a neoclassical type piece but a true integration of extreme metal and classical music virtuosity.

It's highly recommended you give it a good listen below! Also be sure to read Nick Vasallo's program notes to learn more.

I seldom name a work before composing it but the discovery of Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s concept of the "black swan" inspired me to structure the entire work around this central idea. Based upon Taleb’s criteria, a “black swan event” is a surprise to the observer, has a major impact, and is rationalized in hindsight – as if it could have been expected (e.g., the relevant data [was] available but not accounted for).

One of my primary goals with Black Swan Events was to create an environment where two worlds collide and become one. I wanted to treat the appearance of Heavy Metal (“metal”) as a surprising event that has a major impact upon the structure of the work. By the end of Black Swan Events, the world of "metal" – represented by the electric guitar and drums –becomes so prevalent and enmeshed within the orchestra that its initial arrival, in hindsight, no longer seems surprising. The relationship between these two worlds – metal and western art music – transforms from instability to resolution and synthesis.

Composers strive to find their own distinct voices and most of these composers, consciously or unconsciously, want their voices to ‘speak’ through their music. The unifying principle in Black Swan Events takes this idea literally. Using experimental software to analyze the spectrum of my extreme metal scream, I developed chords that modeled the scream’s spectrum. I wanted a conceptual relationship to exist between my voice and all of the musical materials in Black Swan Events so that every note is, conceptually, a remnant of my scream. Essentially, I used a spectral-matching orchestrational tool to duplicate the spectrum of my scream and with this solution I built a chord. The primary motivic materials of the piece were built from the collection abstracted from the original spectral data. I also collaborated heavily with Victor Dods, the original guitarist for this work, and incorporated his musical input into the collection of motifs. These motifs play an essential unifying role in Black Swan Events.

While metal is the first and primary black swan event, the piece incorporates several others. I will demonstrate how polystylist and eclecticist philosophies interact in Black Swan Events to produce a highly pluralistic yet unified work, creating a music both alluding to and drawing upon the experience of other genres – born out of personal practice. References and allusions to Neurosis, George Crumb, J.S. Bach, Kanye West, Eddie Van Halen, Stravinksy, Ligeti, Beethoven, and spectralism abound in Black Swan Events. It is my intention to illustrate how my own style functions within the ongoing dialogue of these disparate sources of music.

OBLIVION SIGNS TO UNIQUE LEADER RECORDS!

Brand new death metal band Oblivion have continued to make waves in the metal world long after their debut was released, way back in January. This time the news is a pretty huge deal. Oblivion have announced that they will be taking a big step up from an independent act to a signed one. Unique Leader Records has officially signed Oblivion to their roster. This is big news for a band that has stayed busy since the release of their debut album “Called to Rise.”

This record deal will include a reissue of the band’s debut album “Called to Rise” with limited pressing of physical copies and a focus on bandcamp downloads. The album will feature different packaging, new content, and a brand new bonus track. Unique Leader Records has announced the official worldwide street date of “Called to Rise” as October 15th 2013. So if you haven’t purchased the album at all, want a physical copy, or want to grab another physical copy for the new goodies, it seems like “Called to Rise” will be available in ample supply.

One big question I have is how this signing will change Oblivion. The band has been a studio project from the start. The band members all have lives that they aren’t going to be leaving to tour. I’m assuming Unique Leader is okay with this or there’d be no point to signing them. Will the signing mean more Oblivion music faster? That’d certainly be welcomed. The guys have stayed very busy since the release of their debut. They have a new music video coming out next Monday. This is their fourth video, which is ya know... a lot. Big things seem to be looming on the horizon for Oblivion.

ANOTHER AWESOME NICK VASALLO PIECE

So I was recently looking around Nick Vasallo’s youtube page after writing up a little something about his newest piece “Doomcordion”, and I found another ridiculously awesome piece of music worth sharing with you guys. Dr.Vasallo made a lot of cool music so in 2013, and the year is barely half over. Starting with his new death metal band Oblivion’s debut album, “Called to Rise”, Vasallo also unleashed some awesome solo, classical music pieces. This guy is like a machine.

The piece I’m stoked on right now is called “When the War Began” and it’s awesome. This one is performed by a group called the REDSHIFT ensemble. This group is made up four members: Jeff Anderle on clarinet and bass clarinet, Andie Springer on violin, Kate Campbell on piano, and Michelle Kwon on cello.

This piece invokes images of the apocalypse, the massively powerful, and extremely dissonant music would be the perfect score to an epic movie about the end of all things. Honestly it’s best described by the program notes: “The three movements (I. The Enduring Moments Before Disaster, II. Falling from the Sky, III. Into the Storm) all represent events and images that are associated with the horrors of war. I gave myself a simple narrative akin to a movie script and used this as a model for form. For example, in the first movement a small family waits as they hear the impending sound of war as it nears their door. There is nothing they can do to escape the terror. The handful of simple musical ideas and instruments become complex and surprising characters that can exist in reality or imagination. Extended techniques are used to emulate the sounds of electronic music and sound effects.”

Go check out the other videos I’ve posted too and check out all of Dr. Vasallo’s amazing work.

NICK VASALLO RELEASES NEW PIECE

Resident composer, Doctor of music, and death metaller Nick Vasallo (vocalist of Oblivion and composer of classical and metal tinged classical pieces) has returned with another odd and interesting piece once again. This time the mastermind composer fuses doom/drone metal musical styling with the timbres and tones of the accordion. The piece is appropriately titled “Doomcordion” and definitely hits the doom vibe.

The accordion is the only instrument in this piece and is handled, very well in fact, by instrumentalist Matthew Joseph Payne. The are four accordion parts that make up the song, that’s all which is fine. Keeping with the doom/drone styling, there is no rhythm section or pulse to the music. Just four lead accordion parts continuing forth droning on and on. And it’s awesome! The four parts play moving, harmonic chord progressions that are very ominous in voice. The combination of the four parts yields a very overwhelming and massively foreboding sound that without a doubt nails the “doom” feeling that I’m sure Dr. Vasallo was aiming for, just look at the title of the piece. The timbre of the accordion yields a very romantic, majestically royal and medieval, gothic and sorrowful feeling, at least to me. The image this piece evokes in my mind is that of the deathbed of a great King, whose death signifies the casting of an entire kingdom into darkness. Some movie producer should snatch up this piece for his next Lord of the Rings ripoff blockbuster.

Anyways, check out the video of the “Doomcordion” and another of Dr. Vasallo’s pieces, “Only One Survives” provided here as well. Also check out Oblivion, Dr Vasallos death metal band, who released their debut album “Called to Rise” this year, check out our review of said album here (http://www.thecirclepit.com/2013/01/oblivion-called-to-rise-album-review.html). I’ve included one of the bands music videos as well. Dr. Vasallo makes a ton of bad ass music, so check out his youtube account if you want more. Okay I’ve given you all the tools to find this stuff. That’s all I got.

NICK VASALLO - NEW PIECE PERFORMANCE

Nick Vasallo is a die hard prog fan’s dream come true. The man is a doctor of music and a critically acclaimed composer of classical music that is played worldwide. What more can you ask for? After a couple albums of his solo work, Nick helped form, and handles the vocals in, the band Oblivion. You can read our own Mike Thall’s very positive review of Oblivion’s debut “Called to Rise” album here.

Dr. Vasallo finished a new piece, titled “Only One Survives,” and debuted it April 9th 2013. This epic 18 minute piece features various “characters” that fight throughout the music until only one remains. The entire piece was performed by three musicians: Jennifer Culp, Marc Shapiro, and Jack Van Geem. The frenetic cello and piano, pounding percussion, and haunting melodic lines honestly make this more of a symphonic metal piece than a classical piece but that’s semantics. I’ve included the bonus tracks from “Called to Rise” and another Vasallo piece in case anyone’s interested. Just listen and enjoy.
