THROWBACK THURSDAY - THE INFLUENCE OF SIKTH

It’s no secret that the djent scene is getting a huge amount of attention from metal fans and press alike, our site included. And it’s no surprise that a lot of people consider Periphery one of the major leaders of the popularization of the melodic, rhythmic, and ambient styling of the genre. No hesitance is made by anyone when citing Meshuggah as an absolutely huge influence on Periphery and the rest of the growing number of djent bands. But Meshuggah is mostly responsible for the crushing rhythmic brutality of its scores of influenced bands.

If one band were to be cited for influencing the fast, chaotic, melodic and ambient sounds of Periphery and the rest of the growing genre, it would be Sikth. Turn on the first track, “Scent of the Obscene,” off of their 2003 debut album “The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait for Something Wild” to hear every aspect of the modern djent scene. Atonal runs, check. Rhythmic chugging, check. Ambient clean guitar, check. Harsh screaming, yup. Soothing singing, definitely. Single note rhythmic riffs, without a doubt. There you have it, all the ingredients of modern djent.

Sikth currently are broken up but have promised via facebook a third album to follow up “Death of a Dead Day.” It’s unfortunate that more people aren’t talking about the importance of Sikth: if not for the influence then the foresight to play the music they did back when standard metalcore hadn’t even hit it’s stride yet. Look below for links to some sweet, sweet, Sikth.

THROWBACK THURSDAY - SikTh

Does anyone remember SikTh!? Hailing from London, they were serious pioneers on the Prog / Tech Metal front bringing unparalleled creativity, musical drive, and unpredictability. Utterly brilliant and unique. Powered by artists such as Dan Weller (now In Colour with Daniel Tompkins) and Grahm Pin Pinney (now in the band Aliases) among others, SiktTh pushed themselves to god status in the metal underground, inspiring many in the process. To put it simply, these guys were scary good. Listen to a couple tracks from the 2006 epic "Death of a Dead Day" below and see why.

However, they might not be completely finished just yet. Though the band will probably never officially reunite or tour again, there was a major sign of hope last year when ex-SikTh members said the following...

"Calls for a reunion are amazing.. thanks… OF COURSE we want to… we’ve never said other wise. It will happen when the times right. There WILL be another SikTh record… and it will be our best… thats a PROMISE. It took us the best part of 2 years to complete the writing of DOADD so I guess you’ll have to be patient. Besides, theres a bucket load of riffs that we wrote for album three still sat there – so we’ll have a head start next time ;-)"

Stay tuned!

DANIEL TOMPKINS / DAN WELLER ANNOUNCE NEW BAND

It's not a metal band, but we like to support friends of metal regardless. Daniel is by far one of my personal favorite vocalists with his incredible work in Tesseract and Skyharbor. Dan Weller was the amazing guitarist from SikTh whose work has inspired many. Truely amazing work from both individuals. So for those of you who are interested in the careers of these men, I'd like to announce that they have officially joined forces in the band In Colour full time! The band has a very ethereal, quality sound. Check out some new music below. We wish In Colour the best of luck! Incredible talent, incredible music. And I gotta say, Daniel drives really damn well with his eyes closed.
