ELITIST "BETWEEN THE BALANCE" EP REVIEW

“Between the Balance” is the third EP, and the fourth record from LA based Prog Metalcore outfit Elitist. It comprises of 5 tracks in the following order: "Domino Theory", "Return to Sender", "Vice Versa", "Echo in the Room" and "Lonely Giant". Closely following on the heels of their full-length, Elitist has narrowed down on a sound that is an amalgamation of generic Djent meets Hardcore. The album opens with my personal favourite (of the EP) “Domino Theory”. Having checked out the first single off the EP “Echo in the Room” I was quite apprehensive of how the release would fare, but thankfully they still retain the habit of opening tracks with a dapper of a riff interspersed with a clean, melodic lead. Although not true for the entire EP, Elitist have long abandoned the consistent face-melting brute riffage to make room for cleans, and tried and tested compositional patterns. Also, "Between the Balance" sees guitarist Julian Rodriguez teaming up with vocalist Chris Balay for the clean sung sections. Ben Kazenoff consistently skin slams his way through the album and it would be safe to say that I still find his chops enviably good.

Not entirely blown away by their full length “Reshape|Reason”, which was released last year, I had my fingers crossed for an EP that treads the same path as “Caves” or “Earth”. Agreed, the “Echo in the Room” single was a gist of what to expect from the record, but nevertheless, it’s a bit of a let-down to see that they have watered down their sound; “Watered down” not in the sense that they are any less technically proficient, just that the EP had a lot of potential to be the next “Caves” EP. One cannot expect any artist to do the same thing over and over and expect the same effect on people and I do respect their decision to expand into a different dimension. However, at the risk of being questioned about how much I am entitled to criticize the band, I’d say they should keep steering towards what they portray in “Domino Theory”. With an opening riff that is briefly reminiscent of their earlier works, and Erra-esque vocal patterns, this track would have most Prog Metalcore fans pumping fists and foaming at their mouth.

Most listeners must have noticed the fact how the vocals in an Elitist record keep changing with each coming release. Keeping in mind that variety is a spice, I daresay the borderline Post-hardcore-ish vocals do not cut well. While the band knows what’s best for them, as a diehard fan of their first two works I’d say it would behoove them to stick to the “Caves/Earth” vocal texture, while going easy on the cleans.

“Between the Balance” best defines the phrase “mixed feelings” for me. The reason behind it is twofold: While they seem to be reverting back to familiar pastures with tracks like “Domino Theory” one cannot say for sure if they are aiming for the same effect, partly because the cleans get in the way, and secondly because the breakneck, mad-scientist Hardcoreriffage which had won them so many fans is missing. I would be lying if I said, “Between the Balance” is entirely uninspiring, because tracks like “Domino Theory” and “Lonely Giant” are what I look forward to when I sit down with the EP. Also, if clean, crisp production is what you are looking for, then rest assured the band is yet to let us down on that front.

Clocking in around 22 minutes, “Between the Balance” makes a solid case for whatever the band had done wrong with the full-length which divided opinions, and how they are planning to add fresh numbers to their kitty while staying true to their policy of easily accessible groove laden Metalcore. Keeping in mind whatever I nit-picked above, I’d still suggest old fans of the band to check the EP out instead of trusting my judgement. For anyone new to camp Elitist, I recommend you listen to this record before you check out their previous works. I abide by what a peer from the interweb forums suggested the other day: “Between the Balance” lives up to its name.

NEW MUSIC TUESDAY - JULY 30TH

Another week has rolled on by and I have three more albums for you to check out.

Chimaira is a band that I’m sure all of you know. They came up around the same time and are a kinda similar to Lamb of God in style. Well the band’s history has been pretty tumultuous. Sole remaining member from the band’s classic lineup and singer Mark Hunter has surrounded himself with a new group of guys and they’re releasing an album today. It’s called “Crown of Phantoms” and this is probably the best Chimaira album in a while. I made it all the way through the new video and enjoyed, out of place solo and all. Check this one out.

Another band that has mixed it up stylistically and is releasing an album today is Mercenary. The guys are releasing their newest release titled “Through Our Darkest Days” today. The band has continued to leave the melodic death metal sound behind for a more modern melodic metal style akin to Soilwork or Scar Symmetry with this release. This album won’t break too much new ground, or light up any eyes but this is an album to be enjoyed and not overly analyzed.

Elitist are back with a new EP today titled “Between the Balance.” Based on the first single, it appears that these guys have expanded their range of sounds a decent bit. Unfortunately it seems to be in the metalcore/post-hardcore direction. Time will tell how this stuff stands up to their previous work. Either way, if you’re interested in Elitist, this is definitely worth checking out.

ELITIST "BETWEEN THE BALANCE" EP PREVIEW

Elitist will release a brand new EP July 30th! It's titled “Between The Balance.”  So far they've released the official artwork, pre-orders, and the first single titled "Echo In The Room".

This new track comes fresh off the new release. Very similar to previous “new music releases” Elitist have made, “Echo In The Room” exhibits unforgettable metal-ness as well as noticeable progression in delivery. Call it “change” if you want. Bottom line, this is a powerful song and a nice taste of what is to come. Stay tuned.

They'll also be on tour with Misery Signals from the EP's release date through August 11th. Go forth and mosh!

ELITIST STUDIO UPDATE 2

Elitist has hit us with another studio update! The previous update showcased some vocal work; this one shows some guitar…and an R&B segment that hopefully won’t make the final cut for their upcoming EP.

ELITIST STUDIO UPDATE

Elitist hasn’t even waited a full year after their powerful full length release “Reshape Reason” before resorting back to the studio in works of rewarding fans with another EP. They show no signs of slowing their roll, which is great news considering their rapidly expanding fan base.

Here is a studio update video showing how vocalist Chris Balay gets stuff done. Pretty freakin raw if you ask me…just hearing the little sample snippets of new music get me jittery. Elitist claims this studio update to be first of many so look out!

TOP ALBUMS OF 2012 - HONORABLE MENTIONS

Here are 5 amazing albums from this year that were just shy of making our top ten. They all deserve your full attention as the honorable mentions of 2012.

   1
GOJIRA - L'ENFANT SAUVAGE

There's no doubt that Gojira's "L'enfant Sauvage" (French for "The Wild Child") is an amazing album. To put it simply, one of the best things about Gojira is that they always manage to sound like Gojira. This is a band which proves that musicians don't need to be complex to be musically efficient. Not to say there isn't depth and complexity here. Gojira pummels the listeners eardrums with blasting heaviness and musically creative force. There are so many awesome tracks on this record. The title track, "The Axe", "Explosia", and "Mouth of Kala" are just a few examples of the greatness you can expect from "L'enfant Sauvage". It's a wild ride.

   2
THE OMEGA EXPERIMENT - SELF TITLED

This is the kind of record that will catch you off guard. You go into it expecting one thing and experiencing something entirely different. The Omega Experiment's self-titled debut strikes as a powerful cross between Supertramp and The Devin Townsend Project with a pinch of Meshuggah... Yeah, go ahead and read that again. All of this while bringing a sound of their very own which is hard to describe. When you add it all up, it makes for a mind blowing, unique musical experience. Tracks such as "Stimulus", "Terminus", "Gift", and "Furor" are guaranteed to leave you wanting more goods from The Omega Experiment.

   3
VEIL OF MAYA - ECLIPSE

Veil of Maya's fourth full-length record really stood apart from the rest while simultaneously staying rooted. For example, the intro "20/200" sounds like a throwback to "Common Man's Collapse" while the title track is easily the most melodic, open song the band has ever written. "Eclipse" really opened up a whole new dimension of Veil of Maya with an increased focus on musicality. This may have been in part to Misha Mansoor's production and influence, but the fact is this record provides phenomenal music through and through. Stand outs include "Divide Paths", "The Glass Slide", "Vicious Circles", and "Punisher" among others.

   4
THE TONY DANZA TAPDANCE EXTRAVAGANZA - DANZA IIII

Not only does The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza have the best band name ever, they always manage to produce devastating, awesome metal. The bands fourth and sadly final album, "Danza IIII: The Alpha - The Omega" is no exception. It's also too cool for Roman numerals. This is an earth-shattering venture into chaotic, technical heaviness. There are many greats on this record like "You Won't", "Canadian Bacon", "Paul Bunyan and the Blue Ox", "Rudy X3", and you can't forget the semi-title track, "The Alpha, The Omega". "Danza IIII" is a worthy end to this band's insane career. R.I.P. Tony Danza... talking about the band, not the actor.

ELITIST - RESHAPE | REASON

Elitist have been emerging as one of the best Metalcore bands around. Actually, their debut full-length "Reshape | Reason" is easily the best Metalcore record released in 2012. Even with various key line-up changes over recent years, Julian Rodriguez's compositional ability has remained true, even improved in some ways. There is a progressive, creative take on how this band approaches the core, yielding amazing results. With a serious focus on driving melodies and musical execution, Elitist produced a monster of a debut record here. "Square And Compass", "Equinox", and "Unto The Sun" make an aural impact among others.

ELITIST "RESHAPE | REASON" ALBUM REVIEW

Back in 2010, the band Elitist unleashed one of the more rhythmically complex records to ever bless my ears. The EP "Caves" bent the listeners mind from start to finish. The Los Angeles based band experienced several line up changes following that release, losing both their drummer Robert Platz and vocalist Jacob Katz (oh, the rhymes). These changes had a noticeable effect on their follow up EP "Earth". Though it was a good release, it didn't have the same 'umph' that "Caves" did. And after that there were even more line up changes, losing Sean Hall as well. They released a single titled "Dreamwalker" which was interesting, but here's a shocker... there were more line up changes. Ultimately the band settled with original members Julian Rodriguez, the driving force and lead guitarist of Elitist, and Mike Danese on bass. New members include Chris Balay on vocals (worked with Julian on the Forever Orion project), and Ben Kazenoff on drums. After the last single, hopes for a full length were mounting.

And that full length has finally arrived. But does it live up to the hype and hopes of fans? Essentially, this is a great album. Every song has something to offer and parts will probably end up stuck in your head all day. "Reshape | Reason" is definitely a full step up from the "Earth" EP. But I still wouldn't say it has quite the 'umph' that "Caves" did. Objectively, a few parts may feel lackluster and generic, but overall "Reshape | Reason" is a very good release. You can tell Julian Rodriguez and crew are growing as musicians and it's cool listening to that evolution.

Right away you notice the serious melodic side of Elitist mixed with the band's signature rhythmic complexity and creativity in the stand out opener "Unto The Sun". The band has an impressive sound. This is really the story for most of the album with other stand out tracks such as "Square And Compass", "Reshape Reason", "Equinox", and "Lucid Dream" among others. There are some very interesting and unexpected segments to be found on "Reshape | Reason". "Transmutation" is an absolutely beautiful melodic interlude and "Sacred Geometry" closes with an awesome, intricate piano piece. Also, this is the first release from Elitist to feature clean singing. This includes a cameo from ERRA's Garrison Lee. Like I said before, every track on "Reshape | Reason" has something good to offer.

To sum things up, this is a great record. Not perfect, but definitely impressive. I seriously recommend that all you metal heads give "Reshape | Reason" a good listen or two. And if you like what you hear, consider buying the record and throwing some money at Elitist. These guys deserve it.

ELITIST "RESHAPE REASON" ALBUM PREVIEW

As I recently stated in the Sean Hall review...

As of yesterday, that full length is officially finished and will be coming out this Fall. Pre-orders will be available within a few weeks. The band recently released the title track "Reshape Reason" which can get stuck in your head easily along with a playthough. They also released a "Making Of" video of the new album which goes fairly in depth. All of the above can be found below.

SEAN HALL "TERRESTRIAL" EP REVIEW

Back in 2010, the band Elitist unleashed one of the most rhythmically complex records to ever bless my ears. The EP "Caves" bent the listeners mind from start to finish. The multi-talented Sean Hall (aka Sean Thall) was one of the two guitarists in the band at the time but left after the release of the band's second EP "Earth". I'm assuming he did this with the intention of pursuing personal artistic goals, but don't take my word for it.

Earlier this month, Sean came back good as ever with a self-released instrumental EP titled "Terrestrial" which might as well be called "Sean Hall's Guide To Playing Tight As F%@k." Produced and co-written by Diego Farias of Volumes, the EP has a very legitimate feel to it.  It starts out atmospherically with the track "Terraform" which features a sound bite from the movie Prometheus if I'm not mistaken (actually I think a good bit of the EP may be inspired by the "Aliens" universe which is beyond awesome). But the atmosphere is soon ripped into by a sharp "djent" tone leading into the type of awesome, in your face rhythmic pattern you should come to expect from him. The second track "Arrival" was released well before the rest of the EP but might be my favorite song off it. You can listen below. This track is incredibly tight and technical. It has a simple, yet very powerful lead starting a little over a minute in which really drives the song. This can be found in a couple parts of this EP. The lead guitar work isn't always the most complex, but it is definitely effective. But Sean Hall is always driving the complexity of the rhythmic elements which is what he does best in my opinion. The same is true for "Orrery", which is probably the most uplifting and melodic song on this release. It still manages to sound huge and provides an ear candy solo towards the end. When the 4th song "Xenomorph" (another "Aliens" reference) isn't busy crushing your skull, it really brings the melody. It definitely has shades of Elitist, which makes sense considering it was co-written by Julian Rodriguez from Sean's old band. The final track "New World" is just plain great. It really showcases Sean's musical ability and probably has some the best lead guitar work on the entire release. It ends with a strong piano solo which really makes this song stand out.

This EP is a tight, technical feast for the ears. If you dig it as much as I do, you should consider buying it. The money will go towards making physical copies and shirts. This guy is a real jack of all trades artist (musican, tattoo artist, painter, etc.) who deserves all the support he can get.

In other news, Sean Hall is currently working with Elitist's lead guitarist Julian Rodriguez again on a joint side project. Get stoked because they make a dangerous combo.
