Rolling Stone recently spoke with Mastodon's drummer Brann Dailor in regards to the band's new album. They're currently preparing to enter the studio and have found a producer in Nick Raskulinecz (who has worked with Deftones, Alice In Chains, and Queens Of The Stone Age). “It’s gonna be massive and insane, lots of epic greatness. There will be lots of huge riffs and new directions. It’s real weird, real math-y, real straightforward. It’s up, down and all around.” He laughs. “It’s a culmination of everything for the band. The snowball keeps rolling and collecting snow.”
“There’s very few things that anybody can do to stop a Mastodon record from being born. And this thing’s gonna get born, OK? And there’s nothing anybody can do about it. We’re ready to lay them shits down. We’re ready to rock.”
In regards to working with Nick Raskulinecz he said:
“He’s a rock guy. He’s a rocker. He likes to rock. He’s done a bunch of our friends’ records that sound great. I’m a fan of all the Deftones records he’s done, all the Alice In Chains stuff, and he worked with Queens Of The Stone Age on Songs For The Deaf.”
Apparently the band has written approximately 19 songs in preparation of the new album. The number will be cut down through the recording process until the cream of the crop remains. Stay tuned for more from Mastodon.
Alcohol and metal have a long standing alliance. So it comes as no surprise that many upscale metal acts have released their own brands of alcohol over time. Names like Iron Maiden, Slayer, and Motörhead come to mind when it comes to brewing.
Well it looks like the sludge pros in Mastodon are the newest addition on this list. They've released their brand of "Black Tongue" beer and it's a "pallet crusher". To be more specific, it's an 8.3% double black IPA brewed in association with Signature Brew. You can order it here.
We actually had the opportunity to interview drummer Brann Dailor over the Summer. We asked what his favorite alcoholic beverage was and it basically boiled down to double and triple IPAs. So this move from the band only makes sense.

Celeste is a ridiculously incredible underground French act known for putting together a chaotic, intense mix of hardcore, sludge, doom, black and post-metal. The band has been making music since 2009 and literally built their fan base on stage. So appropriately they're known as an incredible live band with almost 200 shows around Europe, Russia, and Japan with bands like The Ocean, The Locust, Jarboe, Esoteric, Enablers, Fall Of Effrafa, Comrade, Graf Orlock, Zann, Trainwreck, Amenra and many more.

Academy in Brixton, capping off the Atlanta-based band's world tour in support of their critically acclaimed album “The Hunter”. This sold-out performance was Mastodon's first show at the legendary Brixton venue. It won't be their last, as the London audience positively erupted from the opening chords until the final, frenzied encore. “Mastodon Live At Brixton” will be released digitally on December 10th to see and hear what happened on that night.
In addition to performing "Curl of the Burl," "Black Tongue," and "Dry Bone Valley" from “The Hunter,” the band dug into their catalog, unearthing such scorching tracks as "Colony of Birchmen," "Capillarian Crest," and "Iron Tusk." Rolling Stone Magazine referred to the band's sonic attack as one that: "Demonstrates how contemporary hard rock can still be made with imagination, precision and a majestic sense of force."

Lord Dying has been on the road non-stop since the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Summon the Faithless" earlier this year via Relapse Records. The band has not stopped touring and has no plans to stop anytime soon. In addition to their appearance at Phil Anselmo's inaugural "Housecore Horror Film Fest" alongside Pig Destroyer, Down, Repulsion and many others Lord Dying has announced a run of dates for October and the beginning of November in North America.
Next year the band will be heading to Europe for the first time for an extensive tour with label mates Red Fang and TeePee Records artist The Shrine. Lord Dying has also confirmed an appearance at the 2014 Roadburn Festival. A complete list of all dates can be found below.

It's been officially confirmed that the legendary Down is writing new music for your ears. The man Phil Anselmo posted up the picture found below, showing the band in the process of jamming new material.

This is one for the sludge and doom fans in the pit. Ether is a band rising out of Florida with notable potential. This is evident after giving their debut "Human Error" a good listen. The production is on the rough side but the music itself is pretty damn solid.

They just released a brand new music video in support of “Lay My Soul to Waste” through the track "DMSLT". The video is very dark and grimy with an ominous and depressive feel. Pretty much a perfect fit for the thick slab of sludge that makes up the song. Give it a go along with some more tracks from the album below.

Post-metal/sludge metal/whatever you want to call them band Pelican are returning after 4 years with their new album this year, more specifically, this October 15th. This will be the band’s second full length album released on Southern Lord records and the first release that features guitarist Dallas Thomas as an official member of the band. Also, that album artwork is amazing, wow.
Pelican has released two singles at this point for “Forever Becoming” and it sounds promising. The first single titled "Immutable Dusk" is the longer of the two and grooves along in a more plodding fashion, it’s a perfect Pelican song. "Immutable Dusk" was released over a month ago, which seems to have been a bit early for a record that is due out in October, but I guess they wanted to get the hype train moving early. The song moves along with an interplay between a couple of groovy riffs before entering a bass fueled bridge section that is dominated by clean guitars and delay pedals. Here the band is clearly indulging their post-rock side, and this sections melodies take on a pop music like sensibility, which here actually works. This section builds very slowly to distorted guitars and breaks into a thrash metal riff and the song exits in a very metal way.
The second single, an alternate version of a track appearing on the album titled "Deny the Absolute", follows the recent trend of Pelican music and is a little more up-tempo, but the driving groove of the drums and the interplay of a couple solid riffs, combined with another minimalistic, though this time distorted and palm muted, bridge leads to a solid Pelican track. The production so far seems to be raw enough, yet definitely clear enough to satisfy everyone. There's big news regarding German sludge metal masters The Ocean. In fact they have just released a new music video for their song “The Wish in Dreams” off their latest album “Pelagial” which is for sure one of the most successful and acclaimed album of 2013 so far. The video perfectly fits with the dark and submerged atmosphere suggested by the song and the whole album itself.
The video was premiered a few days after the announcement of the second part of their “Pelagial World Tour 2013”, which will take place in Europe between October and November. The first part is taking place right now in North America with their shows in the Summer Slaughter Tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan and many other unbelievably sick bands. They'll also visit Mexico, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Russia. After that they'll head back to Europe for the second part of their tour starting in October with the headlining show at this year's Euroblast Festival and will be playing at ProgPower Festival in the Netherelands with Baroness. After that, they'll head out on a long tour across Europe with the support of 3 amazing bands: Norwegian black jazz band Shining, Tides From Nebula and Hacride. You have no excuse...they're touring the entire fucking world. Don't miss their shows!
When Baroness was extremely unfortunate enough to be caught in that awful, debilitating bus crash a while back, it killed a ton of the bands momentum and put a halt to the band’s plans to tour in support of their very highly acclaimed album “Yellow & Green.” Which is pretty much the worst thing that can happen to metal bands. Not many people need a lesson in the importance of touring, but whatever here I go. These bands need to tour because touring is their job, that’s where the money comes from. So unplanned time off isn’t really doable for most metal underground bands.
Extended time off can keep bands out of the minds of fans and off of the pages of metal press. Touring keeps bands relevant in the eyes of those who matter, the fans who will pay for albums, pay for merch, and pay to see shows. Missed touring opportunities temporarily prevents bands from building their reputation as a solid live act worth paying for in the eyes of fans. This can keep bands from ever making it to the next level or headlining. Fans loved the most recent Baroness album, but unfortunately couldn’t see the music from it performed live as much as they wanted.
In perfect time to make up for this lost touring, and continue building momentum, Baroness has released a live ep, titled “Live at Maida Vale.” This EP was actually recorded way back, in July of 2012, about a year ago for the BBC. This four track album features stuff from “Yellow & Green” that you probably want to hear live. So go stream it and the link below and then go buy it.
It has already been made public that Sludge Metal legends Mastodon have a brand new album on the way. But as of a few days ago more info was released on this matter via an interview conducted by SimmonsTobias at this year's edition of Mayhem Festival. One particular quote sticks out on this matter. “Before we left for the European tour, which was prior to this, we got into a studio with a producer. We started just putting ideas down on tape, so to speak. We have about 25 to 30 songs that are ready for the new record.
We’re obviously not gonna use all 30 of them, but we’re in a much better place than we’ve ever been as far as being prepared during pre-production for an album.
We’d like to get the record finished by the end of the year and have it out as soon as Christmas and all the holidays are over with—maybe, like, March or April, it would be great to have the new record out and then do a brand new tour on some new music.”

This is the kind of news that makes you do a double take. Mastodon meets Disney? Yeah, it's happening.
The song "Island" from the Mastodon album "Leviathan" will be used for the family friendly Disney / Pixar romp "Monsters University". This was recently confirmed by the movie's director Dan Scanlon. You can read what he had to say down below.
Unfortunately, the song will not be included on the official soundtrack (shocker). Either way, it's cool to see some great metal getting exposure on such a large scale. The movie hits theaters June 21st.

Formed after, and thanks to, the end of legendary band Type O Negative, due to the unfortunate death of band mastermind, singer, and bassist Peter Steele, sludge/doom metal band A Pale Horse Named Death released their sophomore offering “Lay My Soul to Waste” earlier this year. This album shows growing maturity and marked improvement compared to its predecessor. This album is a fully realized sludgy, depressing doom metal album that is sure to satisfy those craving some music to bring them down.
Aesthetically, regarding the music, and lyrically A Pale Horse Named Death feels very similar to Type O Negative. Both the drummer and singer/guitarist of APHND are former drummers of Type O. The fuzzy guitar tone found on “Lay My Soul to Waste” certainly is reminiscent of the sounds found on Type O Negative records. Lyrically this band is very bleak, sorrowful, and depressing. This is doom metal for a reason. Tracks "In the Sleeping Death", "Growing Old", "Dead of Winter", and "Cold Dark Mourning" are perfect examples of this lyrical content. These also happen to be standout tracks, so check 'em out.
When it comes to timbre of the voice of APHND and the writing style of the music, “Lay My Soul to Waste” is very reminiscent of Alice in Chains, if not a little heavier. The grooving riffs, shredding, bluesy fantastic solos, and melodic cleans could certainly fit right in on an Alice in Chains album and if they have need to replace Jerry Cantrell or that other dude whose name I don’t know, this is where they should turn. The singing on this album does sometimes differ from the Alice in Chains like style and drifts into the screaming/yelling or harsher singing. But for the most part APHND sounds a lot like Alice in Chains vocally, droning rather than soaring, playing with simple melodies rather than powerful vocals. This style really fits the lyrical content, plenty focused on death and sorrow. This music doesn’t need a power metal singer ya know?
A few key songs on the album feature a cool tremolo effect on the guitars during important sections of the songs, including introductions and verses. This little feature really grabs me in. It’s different for certain; you definitely don’t see many other bands writing a verse riff that is lathered in tremolo. Look at that one song by Green Day everyone knows, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". That’s the perfect example of this effect, Green Day sounds awful melancholic on that track, partially thanks to that introduction. A Pale Horse Named Death conjures this feeling, to a much more prominent effect, and creates an atmosphere of doom reminiscent of attending the funeral of a good friend. This just so happens to be the topic of the lyrics for the closing track "Cold Dark Mourning" which also features this tremolo effect. Another song that uses the effect prominently to good effect is "In the Sleeping Death". Once again, check out these tracks.
“Lay My Soul to Waste” comes in three doses of doom. A Pale Horse Named Death brings to the table three types of songs; rocking, mid-paced, sludgy cuts, middle of the road calmer, more melancholic tracks, and all out depressing, funeral, emotionally heavy monsters of doom. This album really is very diverse. Tracks like "Shallow Grave", "Devil Came with a Smile", "DMSLT" and "The Needle in You" feature the Alice in Chains like grooving riffs and melodies. These tracks a fast paced, for this album yet still pretty slow and heavier aesthetically. Some of these songs feature harsher vocals and blazing, bluesy solos. These songs honestly could fit right in on mainstream rock radio, just like the new Alice in Chains record is, yet don’t massively suck. Then there are the mid paced songs, these songs are a less rocking and more mood oriented. Acoustic, rhythm focused "Dead of Winter" is a fantastic track. Completely different from the rest of the record, this song has its own vibe that’s difficult to describe but it’s not fully depressing, but it’s certainly not happy, uplifting, or energetic in any way. Theatrical "Growing Old" is another cut that’s out of place in the best way. Changes of vibe are always welcome on albums like this. Too much doom or sludge rock can make the album tedious to listen to. “Lay My Soul to Waste” never gets close to tedious, partly due to solid song writing and partly due to some oddball songs. Last we have the monsters of doom. These are the most emotional, slowest paced and longest tracks on the album. These are "Day of the Storm" and "Cold Dark Mourning." Lyrically these tracks deal with the death of millions, and the death of a very close friend respectively. The vibe is perfect for each of these tracks. "Day of the Storm" features overly distorted guitars playing slow, ominous melodies that sound foreboding, just like the lyrics. "Cold Dark Mourning" is cleaner guitar tone oriented. The tone of this song, simpler chord based writing, and slower simple vocal melodies really nail the sorrow filled, very personal vibe that is perfect for the song.
A Pale Horse Named Death’s second offering is absolutely fantastic. This album is essential listening. The best of Alice in Chains and some of the best parts of Type O Negative are slammed together for an album that really does not disappoint. Pick up this album and support the band. The guys write some music that really is a pretty fresh take on the sludge/doom genre. I can’t understand anyone who is a fan of the genre not enjoying this album. “Lay My Soul To Waste” gets a 9.5/10.
Sometimes a band comes along and releases an absolutely ridiculous debut album that proves beyond any doubt that they are for real. Anciients did just that with debut album “Heart of Oak.” This album is a sludgy, progressive, heavy, intricate, melodic, crushing work of metal art. “Heart of Oak” is just done right. The band has drawn stylistic comparisons to Mastodon, Baroness, Intronaut, and even the legendary Opeth. And while I certainly can hear these bands influences on the overall sound, I honestly think Anciients transcends comparisons. Onto the music.
The staple of this band is the riff. Sludgy, heavy, headbanging riffs. These guys just an extremely acute knack for writing solid riffs. The dudes write very memorable riffs. “Heart of Oak” is certainly not another pot of riff soup. No these guys are masters of the song. A couple very solid main riffs make up the backbone of the track. Repetition is used for effect masterfully. The band will sometimes jam on a single riff for nearly two minutes. "The Longest River" is a perfect example of this. The sludgy repetition hammers the riffs into your brain in the best way possible. The familiarity repetition provides makes for one memorable ride that isn’t overly difficult to follow, perfect for cruising along and enjoying what’s being played.
The Ancients guitarists also know how to lay down the shred. Plenty of solos dot the landscape of “Heart of Oak.” Fast, bluesy, classic rock influenced solos provide exhilarating climaxes to these masterful songs. The shred these guys summon reminds of the soloing skill and style of Mastodon, except only better and more refined. The guys sense of melody is impeccable. Whether it’s a winding riff or lick, or a blazing solo, the melodies on “Heart of Oak” are phenomenal.
The band's sense of structure is also impeccable. Every song, aside from the minute long interlude, is over 6 minutes long. And they don’t drag on at all. They may trudge through some parts during the more sludgy segments, but this is a product of a successful artistic move. The song’s extra length gives plenty of time for extended intros, outros, and bridges. Anciients know how to build up a song. The longest track on the album, appropriately titled, "The Longest River", features both a long introduction and extended outro, featuring solid guitar soloing. The songs always change tempo at the perfect time, kicking it into high gear, or slowly down to enjoy the journey at the perfect time. Once again, Anciients just does everything right.
Vocally, Anciients features two main styles. A clean voice, and a powerful mid ranged growling voice. Both of these styles exude manliness. The soaring cleans never enter the over dramatic high pitched realm of Power Metal. No these are cleans for bearded masters of sludge and metal. The death/black metal vocals are actually fairly decipherable and perfectly accent the heavier passages played found in most of the songs. The two styles play off each other masterfully and avoid feeling like cheesy and boring “Good cop, bad cop” vocals. What a surprise, Anciients just does vocals right as well. Who woulda thunk?
Anciients have released a masterpiece of a debut with this one. And this is only their debut. Another five albums just like this would be amazing, but imagine how much more these guys can do. “Heart of Oak” got a ton of much deserved press before and surrounding its release on April 16th on the solid label Seasons of Mist. I took some time with this review to really let the album sink in so I’m a little late to the party with this one but hey, I’m sure these Canadians don’t mind at all that people are still talking about their album. And people will definitely be talking about this album at the end of the year so if you haven’t heard it, get on it.

Anciients have been building a storm following this release by opening for both Lamb of God, and the Death the All tour. Both of these are incredible opportunities for a band this young. Anciients also just released a live music video featuring actual live audio. That doesn’t happen too often. “Heart of Oak” is absolutely essential listening. Spin this one, now. This one gets a perfect 10/10.

A Pale Horse Named Death release their second album, titled “Lay My Soul To Waste.” The sludgy, grungey metal project of two former Type O Negative drummers is beginning to make some waves in the metal community with the two songs they’ve released so far, "The Needle in You" and "Shallow Grave”. “Lay My Soul To Waste” is available via Steamhammer/SPV. Pick it up if you’re interested in what you hear below, this should be a good album.
Metalcore / post-hardcore band Death of an Era release their EP “The Great Commonwealth". The band, a 5 piece group from Columbus, is looking to escape “a wasteland of the same tired breakdowns and unoriginal riffing” with this release. I’m not sure if they’ve accomplished their goal but the EP is worth a listen if you are a fan of post-hardcore or metalcore. Check out their single "Shapeshifter" below.
Upcoming band “NK” or North Korea, featuring members of “Envy on the Coast” and “The Dillinger Escape Plan” are releasing their debut record “Nothing to be Gained Here” today. The music is anything but typical, featuring the rhythmic drumming of “Dillinger Escape Plan” drummer Billy Rymer (Two releases in two weeks. Not bad Billy. Not bad). “NK” is an odd band, kinda punkish. I dunno. Check it out if you wanna keep up with Rymer and his musical activity. Stream their new record here.
I just stumbled upon this sizable gem of free music from Philadelphia label Relapse Records. Relapse has always been a solid label stacked with a number of extreme metal acts. Among the ranks stand Dying Fetus, Spawn of Possession, Baroness, Pig Destroyer, Royal Thunder, and the legends Death. There's plenty more where that came from.
