SJ = Shayne Johnson
MT = Mike Thall

MT - We’re glad to have The Schoenberg Automaton on board as our Artist of the Week! How’s it going dudes?

SJ - We're going pretty damn well; however, I am at work right now, pumping through the pig of week known to the populace as "Monday".

...I hope that sentence provides wonderful visuals.

MT - Indeed it does. You guys are damn heavy. I mean that in a metal, not a fat kinda way. You also throw in all kinds of crazy technicality and twists through your music. How do you go about writing this insanity?

SJ - Meth.

No, but seriously I think it was never really the intention to be overtly heavy for the sake of it. Nelson and I started writing tunes that we just wanted to sound crazy, and ever since then it has almost taken on its own sonic path. I guess when you have a group of 5 non-genrephobes, things just sort of blossom into something different.

MT - Meth is one helluva drug. Who or what inspires your music?

SJ - Metal-wise, we often get comparisons to bands like Decapitated, Ion Dissonance, TDEP etc, but I think it's the vibe and lack of barriers that inspires us and spurs us to think outside the box.

Anyone can tune down to Drop-Q and binary their way to teh heaviez, and same with anyone can do sweeps and impressive technical feats to sound "tech", but it's way more interesting to sit there and create what you would like to listen to.

MT - How did the band get started up?

SJ - It originally started with a crappy demo song that I made and passed on to Nelson, who was playing in a rock band at the time. After which, we sat and wrote Pineapple Juice and the Tough Stuffed Olive together. He literally wrote the drums, and then I wrote around that.

To be honest, I think we both originally just wanted it to be a sweet project for us to be proud of, but it became too exciting to keep it like that. We decided to make it a real band and go from there. Each new member brought something synergistic and it has just evolved since then.

MT - Is there a story behind your band’s name?

SJ - Hahaha, there is, actually! Nelson and I were brainstorming some pretty fruitless ideas about the name of the project for quite a while. From some reason or another, I had a dream that Arnold Schoenberg (the 20th century composer who still remains one of my favourites) came back as an Art Deco/Clockwork robot. It seemed to stick and work for the sound concept we were going for.

Also, it's hilarious collecting photos of all the misspellings from promoters... the best so far has got to be Schoenburg Tomato.

MT - Hahah wow, sound delicious You recently dropped your debut full-length “Vela”. What all went into creating that monster?

SJ - A lot of stress, time and delays... not to mention it also included the search for a new vocalist.
We originally recorded the drums at Studio 454 with Dan Fields. Dan was great, because he had the same vision as the rest of us did in regards to the actual production. Absolutely anyone can jump behind an electric kit or their DAW of choice and go bananas, but we spent a lot of time trying to capture the natural kit.
The bass was recorded by Zimi, guitars were recorded mostly by myself and vocals were handled by Adam Merker at Studio Anders Debeerz. Adam has been a close friend of ours for a long time and handled the mixing duties before handing it over to Joel Adams for mastering.

Every person involved were just as passionate about creating something away from the typical overly-quantised metal as we were (sometimes when faced with more delays, more so, hahaha).

MT - How has the response been?

SJ - Overwhelmingly positive. It's seriously humbling to hear some of the great comments back from YouTube, or the people that take the time to message the band's page with how much they've enjoyed listening to it. Most people are happy with hearing something different and we're stoked to be having that response!

MT - That's good to hear! How do you guys come up with song titles? You have some great ones like “Pineapple Juice & The Tough Stuffed Olive”, “Ultimatewhirringendmachine”, and “The Woodhouse Sakati Syndrome”.

SJ - Hahaha! Another good question; to be honest, most of the songs on Vela have some form of backstory behind the inception of their name. Except for Pineapples... it was essentially a random placeholder for the first song we ever properly created.

We've never really been a fan of overly grim or generic metal titles.

MT - We’ve noticed there’s an insanely good metal community building in Australia. What bands would you recommend from down under?

SJ - Oh there's heaps!

My personal favourites are King Parrot, Aeon of Horus, Lagerstein, A Million Dead Birds Laughing, Hadal Maw, Psycroptic and The Amenta.

Thy Art is Murder and Northlane are absolutely killing it right now, so major props to them.

MT - What are your plans for the rest of 2013?

SJ - Touring and Writing.

Unfortunately, since most of us have full-time jobs, TSA isn't our career. We'd love it to be, but for now we have been spacing out our shows as much as we can afford. We have some shows lined up with Psycroptic and King Parrot in August, as well as a bunch of other plans in the works that have yet to be announced. The Facebook page would be the best port of call to see what we have up our wizard sleeves.

MT - How often / how much does The Schoenberg Automaton play live?

SJ - We've been playing quite a bit this year in wake of the album launch across most of the east coast of Australia, playing our first headline show interstate last month. Since we work, we try and pick and choose the most beneficial shows and avoid playing in the same area too often.

MT - Makes sense. What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you at a show?

SJ - There's a couple of winners - we were fortunate enough to win Triple J's Unearthed competition this year, which enabled us to share the main stage with Linkin Park and Slayer. It was an incredible experience, and one of the greatest moments in our lives.

There was also that othertime that we dressed up as pirates (apart from Damo, who wore a mullet wig and shiny leggings) and played a festival in the carpark of a pub.
I may or may not have completely forgotten the easiest part of Ghost of Mirach and nearly cause a grinding halt...

MT - Ouch. At least you got through it. Here’s comes the fun round… Where are we, in a cube?

SJ - Well, it depends on what you perceive as a cube? Why would you ask me if you already assume it's a cube?

Don't tell me what to do. You're not my real dad.

MT - Oh man, I hope I'm not your dad haha. Those are all the questions we have. Thanks for your time! Are there any shout outs you wanna give before we wrap up?

TSA - Thanks heaps for this, it's been pretty damn excellent. Huge shout outs to everyone that has shared the new video, or the tunes or just generally enjoyed our shenanigans in any way. You guys rock

THE SCHOENBERG AUTOMATON "A STONE FACE OF PIETY" MUSIC VIDEO

Australian Death Metal pros, The Schoenberg Automaton, just released their second music video ever. This was done in support of their debut full-length "Vela" which grinded the brains of listeners towards the beginning of this year. You can read our official review of that greatness right here.

As a wonderful comment we received said... "This album is crazy from start to finish. If Ion Dissonance and Slice the Cake fucked savagely and had a pretty little baby, this would be said pretty little baby, except it would be neither pretty nor little, it would be a FUCKING monster." That pretty much sums up TSA.

Onto the video itself. They're covering a five minute track making this one an endeavor but I'd say they pretty much nailed it. This isn't so much a video as a descent into insanity. Appropriate considering the band's over the top, extreme delivery. It literally begins with a member of the band burying a corpse as dark atmosphere surrounds. Soon after he pursued by a specter (Slenderman?), hallucinations occur, yada yada - go watch it. Also be sure to give the album a listen here if you haven't already.

EXPLORING THE WORLD - AUSTRALIA'S RISING METAL SCENE

AC/DC! Ok that's kinda obvious...oh gosh, we're here for an exploration! Give us something new! Ok...Australia definitely has a prestigious history when it comes to metal and hard rock. But in the last few years, from 2000 onward, a lot of new bands started to gaining worldwide exposure. Two big names, Airbourne and Wolfmother, picked up the heritage of AC/DC but Australia has recently developed a really fecund underground metal scene with a lot of talented bands emerging from every genre of modern metal. Let's try to make a small recap of the best things that this great nation has to offer to the world, since a lot of people don't even know that some of these bands are actually from another continent.

Let's start by taking a look at the local metalcore scene. The first huge name we all immediately think of is Byron Bay's Parkay Drive. This band definitely became one of the world's leading metalcore bands, especially in the wake of their last two albums "Deep Blue" (2010) and "Atlas" (2012).

A strong push to the Australian metalcore scene was also given by the local label We Are Unified which discovered almost all of the following metalcore bands, some of which also got signed by Roadrunner Records. For example, the party hardcore of Deez Nuts is currently enjoying huge success and it's taking them on tour all over the world. They have a new album coming out at the end of the month called "Bout It!" and it's looking to be a hit. Another band which is kicking ass world-wide is The Amity Affliction, recently signed by Roadrunner Records. Also Buried In Verona, who are currently on tour with Chelsea Grin, Attila, Betraying The Martyrs and Within The Ruins and will soon be trekking across Europe with Emmure and Obey The Brave too! Other bands like In Hearts Wake or Dream On Dreamer also have a good fan-base internationally and were both launched by We Are Unified.

There's plenty more to find if we talk about death-related genres. Thy Art Is Murder took the world by storm with their huge 2012 album "Hate", which led directly to their record deal with heavy metal giant Nuclear Blast Records who are now planning to re-release the album. Huge sounds, aggressive and groovy riffage, raw talent and creativity got this band to a really high level during the past few months. Now they even have a nomination as "best new band" at the Metal Hammer's Golden Gods Awards! A really important technical deathcore band is the amazing Signal The Firing Squad. They released a full-length album in 2012 too which was called "Abnegate". It was easily one of the best deathcore albums of the year. Should also mention Make Them Suffer, a young talented symphonic death metal band who's earning big time recognition everywhere thanks to their latest album, "Neverbloom". Psycroptic is another technical death metal band which is well known everywhere by now. They were also signed by Nuclear Blast Records and released a new album in 2012 called "The Inherited Repression". Last but not least you should really give a listen to Universum, a good melodic death metal band which had the honor of working with a lot of amazing guest musicians from bands like Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, Nightrage, MyGrain, and Mors Principium Est!

But some of the most intresting proposals are coming from the progressive scene. The "Toolish" progressive sound of Karnivool, for example, has earned them a ton of followers and the same thing is happening currently for the djent-influenced progressive metalcore band Northlane, which just released their new album "Singularity", brought to you by We Are Unified, again. But the greatness doesn't stop there. What about Dead Letter Circus and their amazing take on progressive rock? The incredible experimentation of Ne Obliviscaris? The sharp cyber-metal delivered by Synthetic Breed? ONAN's incredible guitar skills? The beautiful and symphonic-influenced instrumental soundscapes created by Bend The Sky? The high level music of Circles? The Schoenberg Automaton and their hyper-technical math metal? And there's even more! Halcyon, Memoirs, Escapist etc... Australia is STACKED.

It's safe to say there's a lot of amazing stuff coming out of Australia right now. So many that it looks impossible to make a complete recap of the awesome music you can find down under. So many that I'm sure I forgot someone. We couldn't provide music from every band for obvious reasons, but if you're interested in listening, go ahead and search The Circle Pit or on Youtube / music provider of your choosing. Great stuff \m/

THE SCHOENBERG AUTOMATON "VELA" ALBUM REVIEW

Allow me to introduce you to The Schoenberg Automation; an assemblage of Australian madmen whose latest full-length record, "Vela", is an absolute death metal math monster.

"Vela", like a demanding boss battle at the end of an epic video game, requires (a) me to gather myself before facing it in battle (b) repetitive plays to begin comprehension of its power. Vela towers high above its foes and crushes down on them with a stomp attack worth something equivalent to 9,999 damage points.

The Schoenberg Automation’s style is certainly an original one. With roots to bands like Ion Dissonance, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Red Chord and fast grooves like Ever Forthright, TSA is terrifyingly fun to listen to. And MEAN. Literally, every song starts off heavy as all hell, then STAYS heavy as hell with an extensive collection of sporadic shredderies. The schizophrenic riffs take nothing from the song’s flow. TSA can maneuver amongst tempos and slaughtering patterns with ease. While a sprinkling of strategically placed jazz snippets adds an extra layer to TSA.

The production of the album is perfect for the music in my opinion. The guitars are gritty, weighty and serious even during spazzy high-neck licks. I absolutely love the drums on Vela, especially the sections where the bell is getting whacked on in crazy patterns. An example can be found about halfway through track “All Roads Lead To Rome.” Those bits definitely call for some rewinds. The vocals are straight up death metal front to back with seemingly minimal mastering used, aka RAW as f***. I can hear anger…but it makes me happy. In the promo video for track “Where are we, in a cube?” the bass player uses the same bass as I have but I could never get it sounding like that. Vicious rumbling.

“Stop A God Midsentence” is an appropriate title for this mid-album interlude that differs vastly from the typical and lesser attempts at this. It sets an eerie scene for possibly my favorite track “Arecibo.” I cannot exactly classify the happenings in this song but damn it’s a killer track.

The Schoenberg Automation fills every second of the 46 minute Vela with hard hitting and smart entertainment.

THE SCHOENBERG AUTOMATON "GHOST OF MIRACH" SINGLE

Coming from down under, The Schoenberg Automaton are back with a new single, "Ghost of Mirach". This is the first track released off their upcoming full-length "Vela", which will be the follow up to their insane self-titled debut EP. Likewise, "Ghosts of Mirach" is an insane single. I could try and describe it, but I'll a friend of TSA, Ben Hocking do it instead:

"Matttteeeeee new track is killer! It's kinda like the last level of a really intense video game! You're getting right into it and you have come so far and you really don't want to die coz then you would have to go back to the start again! And you have been playing the game now for hours and your hands are starting to sweat.. It's a really nice day out side and you have spent most of it playing the game but you know it will be worth it once you finish it."

Yep, that pretty much hits the nail on the head. Give "Ghosts of Mirach" a listen below along with some goods from their EP (which is FREE by the way). And expect plenty more off-time chaos when "Vela" drops. Stay tuned.

THE SCHOENBERG AUTOMATON

Coming from Australia, The Schoenberg Automaton are a band that really pushes themselves on the time signature front, creating an interesting brand of mechanical, experimental, eclectic, heavy music. This is definitely recommended to any tech heads out there. Listen to all three tracks off their self-titled debut EP below, including a music video for "Where are We, In a Cube?". And if you like it, download the entire thing on Bandcamp for free!

Rumor has it, the band also has new music on the way. A second release, "Vela", will be dropped my Myriad Records hopefully sooner than later. We have the artwork and trailer for that below the other goods. We'll keep you up to date when The Schoenberg Automaton announces more on that release. But in the mean time.... blast those mechanical jams!
