NORTHLANE "DREAM AWAKE" MUSIC VIDEO

Heavy and hard-hitting, "Singularity" never makes a full plunder, remaining regal with the support of an ethereal influence that is exhibited in all instruments. Ambiance surrounds the listener’s body, barely keeping them afloat above the deep grooves. The album delivers terms that sounds torturous, but musically, when one is teased amongst a perfect balance of angst and bliss, the experience is boundless.

They've released a slew of music videos in support of this. Take a look below and you shall see. Most recently, however, they have released one for the resonating track "Dream Awake". Aesthetically, it may be their most interesting video yet. Which is saying something as their videos are all well done. Give it a watch / listen down under.

NORTHLANE "MASQUERADE" MUSIC VIDEO

There's a new music video on the loose from Australia's very own Northlane. This band has been making some sizable buzz of late with their sophomore album "Singularity" and they don't seem to be slowing their roll. With a catchy sound and loyal fanbase, things are definitely looking up for them.

The music video itself is a live one for the track "Masquerade". Running through a gray scale, it delivers heaviness and energy in a big way. Smell the scent of lies down below along with some more recent Northlane goods.

BEST OF 2013 (SO FAR)

It’s the start of July already. We’re already over halfway through 2013. Jeez time really does fly. The amount of metal of the highest quality that has hit the stores already is astounding. We've been doing our best to keep up with all the notable releases of the year and I think we've been doing a pretty decent job. Not too much has flown under the radar and I’ve personally had time to digest mostly everything I was excited for at the beginning of the year. I’ve been surprised by a lot of the music I’ve really been enjoying, some of which is a lot lighter than I ever would have predicted. Without further ado, here are the Best Of lists and some song highlights from our four main writers starting with my own (albums in no particular order). If you’ve missed any of these, definitely check em out.

JS = Josh Smith
MT = Mike Thall

MT - For starters, is there a story behind the name Northlane?

JS - Yes there is, it’s derived from one of our favorite songs, by one of our favorite bands.

MT - I'll let our readers figure out who that is. I'm pretty sure their name starts with an "Archi" and ends with a "tects". Back to Northlane, you guys are currently one of the bigger metal bands coming from Australia. How does it feel to be considered national heavyweights?

JS - It feels good! After touring so hard for quite some time it feels rewarding to see your band progress. Hard work pays off.

MT - Indeed it does. There was a massive amount of hype leading up to your new album “Singularity”. How do you feel about the response now that the record has been released?

JS - The response has been far greater than we ever imagined. We thought people would like the record. We were very happy with it but we didn’t realize that it would be received so well on this sort of a scale.

MT - Any favorite tracks from the album?

JS - Me personally, I really like "Scarab". The great thing about “Singularity” is everybody seems to have their own personal favorite track, there doesn’t seem to be a clear #1 for everybody.

MT - Have to say "Scarab" is one of my favorites too. There seems to be a theme of psychedelic enlightenment present in segments of “Singularity”. This includes a Terrance McKenna quote among some lyrics. What inspired this element of the album?

JS - It’s an interest we all share and Terrance is a genius. There’s a lot to learn from different walks of life, some of which aren’t so readily accepted or mainstream.

MT - Very true. Beyond that, what inspired the record musically and conceptually?

JS - Lyrically, the vibes are quite positive. Adrian looked to move forward from "Discoveries" which was about growing up and finding out who you really are and what the world around you is really like. "Singularity" is about making a difference and passing on your knowledge of life to other people. Musically we wanted to raise the bar once again but write music that was easier to follow and I think we achieved this.

MT - You guys have been traveling the world. This includes an upcoming Canadian tour with big names like Structures, Texas In July, and Intervals. How stoked are you for that?

JS - Beyond stoked, we LOVE Canada. Structures are very good friends of ours too so we can’t wait to hang with those dudes and play some awesome shows.

MT - Sounds great. If you could tour with any band in the world, who would it be?

JS - Linkin Park.

MT - Definitely not the answer I was expecting. That would be rad though. Here’s the fun round. We heard you guys eat worlds. What planets are on the menu?

JS - Well Earth is gone, Mars is a barren wasteland. I wonder if Pluto would taste like a big dippin’ dot?

MT - Only one way to find out. Those are all the questions we have. Thanks for your time man!

JS - Thanks for having us as artist of the week!

NORTHLANE "SINGULARITY" ALBUM REVIEW

"Discoveries" (2011) marked a great start for Sydney, Australia’s Northlane. With the even greater delivery of "Singularity", Northlane’s much deserved and rapidly expanding fan base is growing faster than imagined.

Each song seems to have its own individual power set but all songs carry a theme of soaring passion and a mood both, atmospheric and abrasive, which is accurately depicted by the album cover. Singularity is littered with interesting rhythms that play within the metalcore framework; but the added complexity of groove patterns makes Northlane an original blend. The feeling of floating and sinking is evident in the guitar work. Riff wise, the guitars jump between mathy pulses and higher neck licks. Layered above a continued ambiance, the riffs are multidimensional and catchy. Occurring in the areas of Singularity where riffing and breakdowns aren’t swarming about, a beautiful release is found in softer guitar fills. “Singularity” is a track dedicated to just this, a hypnotizing instrumental over a great Terence McKenna quote. The title track just pours into “Aspire,” the ruins where all of Singularity’s emotions collide.

Singularity’s, heavy but floaty zeppelin theme is continued through drummer Nic Pettersen. The driving of bass pedal is an undeniable force, but the contradictory feeling comes from the awesome cymbal play. Crashes and splashes along with neat snare pops and ghost notes provide a second tier of listener food. “Windbreaker” is great in this respect, as well as an album favorite. Vocalist Adrian Fitapaldes gives feelings of desire and apprehension as he hovers above the patterns. The relate-ability in the vocals is a one of Northlane’s best features. It doesn’t much matter that some of the lyrics lack a certain intellect. They serve their purpose of pumping inspiration and excitement into the music. “Masquerade” is a great example of Fitapaldes’ ability to add energy. The clean vocals amplify Singularity’s ecstasy, “Quantum Flux” being most noteworthy. The style of cleans are ones that allow the listener to sing-along. Never letting the cleans reach into a range that most of us will never reach, Northlane keeps frequent for easy acceptance.

Northlane’s Singularity will be loved by fans of Volume’s groove, Parkway Drive’s appeal and Elitist’s ambiance. They'll be on tour soon with Structures, Intervals and Texas In July.

EXPLORING THE WORLD - AUSTRALIA'S RISING METAL SCENE

AC/DC! Ok that's kinda obvious...oh gosh, we're here for an exploration! Give us something new! Ok...Australia definitely has a prestigious history when it comes to metal and hard rock. But in the last few years, from 2000 onward, a lot of new bands started to gaining worldwide exposure. Two big names, Airbourne and Wolfmother, picked up the heritage of AC/DC but Australia has recently developed a really fecund underground metal scene with a lot of talented bands emerging from every genre of modern metal. Let's try to make a small recap of the best things that this great nation has to offer to the world, since a lot of people don't even know that some of these bands are actually from another continent.

Let's start by taking a look at the local metalcore scene. The first huge name we all immediately think of is Byron Bay's Parkay Drive. This band definitely became one of the world's leading metalcore bands, especially in the wake of their last two albums "Deep Blue" (2010) and "Atlas" (2012).

Links: Facebook // Twitter // iTunes

A strong push to the Australian metalcore scene was also given by the local label We Are Unified which discovered almost all of the following metalcore bands, some of which also got signed by Roadrunner Records. For example, the party hardcore of Deez Nuts is currently enjoying huge success and it's taking them on tour all over the world. They have a new album coming out at the end of the month called "Bout It!" and it's looking to be a hit. Another band which is kicking ass world-wide is The Amity Affliction, recently signed by Roadrunner Records. Also Buried In Verona, who are currently on tour with Chelsea Grin, Attila, Betraying The Martyrs and Within The Ruins and will soon be trekking across Europe with Emmure and Obey The Brave too! Other bands like In Hearts Wake or Dream On Dreamer also have a good fan-base internationally and were both launched by We Are Unified.

Links: Facebook // Twitter // iTunes

There's plenty more to find if we talk about death-related genres. Thy Art Is Murder took the world by storm with their huge 2012 album "Hate", which led directly to their record deal with heavy metal giant Nuclear Blast Records who are now planning to re-release the album. Huge sounds, aggressive and groovy riffage, raw talent and creativity got this band to a really high level during the past few months. Now they even have a nomination as "best new band" at the Metal Hammer's Golden Gods Awards! A really important technical deathcore band is the amazing Signal The Firing Squad. They released a full-length album in 2012 too which was called "Abnegate". It was easily one of the best deathcore albums of the year. Should also mention Make Them Suffer, a young talented symphonic death metal band who's earning big time recognition everywhere thanks to their latest album, "Neverbloom". Psycroptic is another technical death metal band which is well known everywhere by now. They were also signed by Nuclear Blast Records and released a new album in 2012 called "The Inherited Repression". Last but not least you should really give a listen to Universum, a good melodic death metal band which had the honor of working with a lot of amazing guest musicians from bands like Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, Nightrage, MyGrain, and Mors Principium Est!

Links: Facebook // Twitter // iTunes

But some of the most intresting proposals are coming from the progressive scene. The "Toolish" progressive sound of Karnivool, for example, has earned them a ton of followers and the same thing is happening currently for the djent-influenced progressive metalcore band Northlane, which just released their new album "Singularity", brought to you by We Are Unified, again. But the greatness doesn't stop there. What about Dead Letter Circus and their amazing take on progressive rock? The incredible experimentation of Ne Obliviscaris? The sharp cyber-metal delivered by Synthetic Breed? ONAN's incredible guitar skills? The beautiful and symphonic-influenced instrumental soundscapes created by Bend The Sky? The high level music of Circles? The Schoenberg Automaton and their hyper-technical math metal? And there's even more! Halcyon, Memoirs, Escapist etc... Australia is STACKED.

It's safe to say there's a lot of amazing stuff coming out of Australia right now. So many that it looks impossible to make a complete recap of the awesome music you can find down under. So many that I'm sure I forgot someone. We couldn't provide music from every band for obvious reasons, but if you're interested in listening, go ahead and search The Circle Pit or on Youtube / music provider of your choosing. Great stuff \m/

NEW NORTHLANE SONG - "SCARAB"

Northlane has released another killer single from their sophomore LP, "Singularity", set to release on March 22. Read up on our preview right here. After the rock-solid release of Discoveries (2011) and the most recent singles “Worldeater”, “Quantum Flux”, and now “Scarab”, Northlane has conjured quite a bit of hype and anticipation around "Singularity". The fast grooving “Scarab” re-assures that this album is going to crush. “The truth is WE ALL SUFFERRRR!” – Northlane.

In May, Northlane comes their home near Sydney, Australia to support Structures’ Canadian tour alongside Texas In July and Intervals. This could make for some maple sweet moshery.

NORTHLANE "SINGULARITY" ALBUM PREVIEW

The Australian titans, Northlane, are making a comeback in a very big way, very soon. They will be following up their impressive debut, "Discoveries", with the release of their sophomore full-length, "Singularity", on March 22nd through UNFD/Warner and Distort. Expect groove and heaviness galore from these guys throughout 2013. This will likely be the year their name becomes engrained in the metal underground and possibly beyond.

So far, this band has released two official singles in support of "Singularity". They unveiled the heavy as hell, Vildhjarta-esque "Worldeater" about two months ago and it was met by a very happy fan base. And just this past week Northlane dropped a new music video for the single "Quantum Flux", which is just plain awesome. The song itself displays some interesting side steps for the band while simultaneously staying engrained in their roots. The band also released a video detailing what they've been up to with during the recording / music video shoot process. You can find it down below along with the singles.

All kinds of Australian pre-orders are now available. You can take a look / buy the album here. If you like what you're hearing from this band, get ready for March 22nd. Should be a doozy \m/
