“I can say on behalf of the entire band this video is the coolest music video we feel we’ve ever done. It took forever to come together but it looks awesome. I’ve never been a big music video guy, but the ‘Provision’ video is one I’m proud to share with everyone.” - JB Brubaker

We had one helluva time at Warped Tour this year. It was absolute madness from beginning to end with experiences a plenty. We did everything from covering insane live sets in front of thousands of people to meeting the man Kevin Lyman himself (owner and mastermind behind Warped Tour, Mayhem Festival, etc.). And that's barely even scratching the surface... We sincerely thank Warped Tour for the opportunity. They don't call it the best day ever for nothing.
Of course, being a metal site, we covered the heavy side of the show. We saw (in order) While She Sleeps, Letlive, The Amity Affliction, The Black Dahlia Murder, Volumes, Stick To Your Guns, Like Moths To Flames, Architects, and August Burns Red. We also had an interview with Jake Luhrs from August Burns Red for the sake of supporting his good cause Heartsupport. You can check out all the footage below.
Stay tuned for next year when the madness happens all over again! Also be sure to keep an eye out for additional concert / festival coverage from us (including Kevin's Mayhem Festival). Let's just say we've been busy these past few weeks...
We met up with Jake Luhrs of August Burns Red for the sake of supporting a good cause. We talked about Heartsupport, a non-profit, charitable community kick started by Jake himself. It exists
to encourage, inspire. and bring a message of hope. It's a place for people to talk about struggles and difficult issues and to find healing
and strength. Heartsupport is a community that listens. If there's anything you need to get off your chest, click here.

It’s the start of July already. We’re already over halfway through 2013. Jeez time really does fly. The amount of metal of the highest quality that has hit the stores already is astounding. We've been doing our best to keep up with all the notable releases of the year and I think we've been doing a pretty decent job. Not too much has flown under the radar and I’ve personally had time to digest mostly everything I was excited for at the beginning of the year. I’ve been surprised by a lot of the music I’ve really been enjoying, some of which is a lot lighter than I ever would have predicted. Without further ado, here are the Best Of lists and some song highlights from our four main writers starting with my own (albums in no particular order). If you’ve missed any of these, definitely check em out.

August Burns Red. As of Tuesday, June 25th these guys have officially released five full length albums, and let me tell you, not a single disappointment! In 2005, ABR released "Thrill Seeker", an impressive debut featuring technical guitar work, creative drumming, and of course mosh worthy breakdowns. In 2007 they released "Messengers", one of the heaviest hardcore metal albums of the decade and arguably the most influential album in their discography. Countless bands have tried to emulate the sound of that album, not to mention, songs such as "Back Burner" and "Composure" remain staples in their live shows. The next two albums, "Constellations" (2009) and "Leveler" (2011) showed August Burns Red moving into a more melodic and progressive direction, while still holding onto the technicality and brutality that made them great in the first place. With such an impressive back catalog it's difficult to imagine how they would top it all with the new album.
Well, with the release of "Rescue & Restore" they did. This album is truly in a world of its own and each member has managed to bring their A game on this effort. Jake Luhrs lyrics are as inspiring as his vocals are powerful and brutal, yet he brings something a little different to the table this time around. On songs such as "Spirit Breaker" he makes use of a spoken word verse similar to that of Dallas Taylor on Underoath's "The Changing of Times" album. JB Brubaker and Brent Rambler show their constant improvements as they are able to switch between intricate and technical riffs to beautiful melodies within a matter of seconds. Even the soloing has improved, with songs like "Treatment" demonstrating the melodic style as opposed to the tech-death influenced solo in "Animals" (were they listening to The Faceless?). Dustin Davidson's bass is more audible than it's ever been and in choice moments can sound a bit funky. Matt Greiner's drumming is incredible, but that's honestly more of a fact than an opinion. The man has some of the best skills behind the kit and he really helps to bring out the best in the other members of ABR.
Overall this is probably the most technically proficient album these guys have released. Many of the song structures and breakdowns are reminiscent of the "Thrill Seeker" days while they also continue to expand upon the melodic side established on their most recent albums.
One of the most interesting aspects of this album is the use of various non-traditional heavy metal instruments such as the violin, piano, and trumpet (also the cello played by Grant McFarland). Most of this is used to establish atmosphere with the noticeable exception being the song "Creative Captivity", an experimental piece towards the middle of the album. This song alone is proof that August Burns Red has transcended the Metalcore boundaries and is moving towards a more progressive metal direction.
"Rescue & Restore" is a great release from a phenomenal band, and is worth an honest listen. Check it out!
The kings of viking metal are back today with their newest offering of their signature brand of mighty metal. Amon Amarth is returning today with their newest album titled “Deceiver of the Gods.” The band is rolling with primarily the same style with a little more focus on the thrashy, classic metal sounds. The album is due out on Metalblade Records so that means no spotify. :( But you can stream the entire record here! Pick this one up. It's fantastic.
August Burns Red are back with their brand of melodic metalcore. To me, this band has always leaned more to the hardcore / trendy side of the metalcore world. They are one of the exceptions of this type of band to me, being that I actually enjoy them. They’ve been growing more experimental as songwriters. From the single I’ve heard so far, titled "Fault Line", this album is a little too positive and preachy for me. So I’m gonna have to ignore the lyrics because the music is awesome. Check it out today!
Palms self titled debut album is due out today. This thing has been available for streaming for a while and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. The combination of former Isis members and Chino Moreno has created an incredibly atmospheric and soothing piece of music. This six songs are absolutely fantastic. Fans of “Oceanic” era Isis and Moreno’s softest vocals will be most attracted to Palms but these guys have definitely made an album that is greater than the sum of its parts. The band’s first offering is available today via Ipecac recordings. Pick it up.
Concert season has officially arrived! You know what that means North America... It's time for Vans Warped Tour! The events officially kick off TODAY. First stop is Seattle, Washington. Grab your tickets here!
This will be the tour's 19th year running and there's no sign of them slowing down. Warped Tour 2013 is moving full speed ahead, packing in well over 100 bands for the tour's duration and all kinds of ways to have fun. Warped Tour is more than a concert. It's a moving city of pure entertainment.
This year we'll be covering the heaviest bands they have. August Burns Red, The Black Dahlia Murder, Volumes, Upon A Burning Body, Texas In July, Architects, and more will be in our sights.
While you're waiting for the best day ever, kill some time with our live video recap of Warped Tour 2012 here. Then realize our coverage this year will be ten times stronger! See you in the pit.
August Burns Red seems to have built a bit of a pre-release tradition. Before the release of a new album, there's always a video of their beast drummer Matt Greiner going at it on new material. In this case through a studio report. This particular video shows bits of new material that were recorded at Atrium Audio in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with Grant McFarland (ex-This or the Apocalypse) among others. The drumming itself is rock solid as to be expected from Matt Greiner.
This is most definitely an album to look forward to. "Rescue & Restore" will be hitting store shelves June 25th. You can see our full album preview right here.
Following shortly after the announcement of the new album "Rescue & Restore", August Burns Red have released the first single "Fault Line"! After giving a couple listens, it's safe to say ABR is officially back in action. The song is epic. It actually reminds me of the album "Constellations" in some ways. The single was released in the form of an animated lyric video which is somewhat campy but very well done all things considered. Give it a listen down below alongside some August Burns Red classics.
Also check our album preview right here for additional information on "Rescue & Restore". Pre-order packages are now available too! Grab yours right here.
BIG news here! Lancaster Metalcore legends August Burns Red are slated to release a brand new album next month! June 25th to be exact. This will be done through Solid State Records. The official title will be "Rescue & Restore".
The band made the following statement on the first of May, "Happy May! It's likely you'll be able to hear a new ABR song at some point this month." You know what that means! New single on the way.
The entire tracklisting and album artwork have also been made public. Check 'em out below and stay tuned for much more!

Today we're going to take a look back at works from August Burns Red. In particular, their first two full-lengths "Thrill Seeker" and "Messengers". These are arguably two of the most influential records in all of Metalcore history.
"Thrill Seeker" was released back in 2005. It pushed the Metalcore genre to it's extreme limits with technicality, heaviness, and creativity. This record could be labeled as in a league of it's own, and it still stands out as an original listening experience to this day. It provided about 45 minutes worth of out of the box greatness through tracks such as "Barbarian", "Your Little Suburbia In Ruins", "Speech Impediment", and "Endorphins". And considering it was produced by Killswitch Engage's Adam D, ABR emerged with quite a pedigree. Take a listen below for some thrills.
Two years later would come "Messengers", an absolute staple of the Metalcore sub-genre. A total game changer. This album has direct influence on how a large amount of Metalcore bands write music to this day. It brought a hard hitting, relentless edge and breakdowns so heavy they could put hair on a woman's chest. And did I mention the china cymbal? Whether for better or for worse, this record popularized the china symbol among many core bands with Matt Griener's next level drumming ability. "Messengers" also packs plenty of classics such as "Composure", "Back Burner", "Up Against The Ropes", and "The Eleventh Hour". Take a listen down yonder.
In the weeks leading up to the end of 2012and our top 10 list of the year, we're giving credit to the past couple years as well. 2011 was a landmark year for music, making this list the hardest to construct so far. Without further adieu, here are the top ten albums of 2011, no shits given about whiny elitist opinions. Also check out our top 10 of 2009 and 2010.
1 UNEVEN STRUCTURE - FEBRUUS
This album is too good for words. It is the definition of ethereal beauty with an intelligent, heavy groove laced throughout. Uneven Structure's full-length debut "Februus" is an hour and a half long masterpiece spanning across two discs. This French musical unit put 2 years of meticulous effort into constructing "Februus", making for one of the most surreal packages to ever bless human ears. Everything about this record is perfect. There's a vast amount of ground across the uneven soundscapes for ears and brains to explore. Every single track on this album is huge and awe-inspiring. "Februus" gets the award for 2011's album of the year.
Tesseract's debut full-length "One" is easily one of the best records to drop in 2011. Actually almost the best. With genius level songwriting and the magical vocal work of Daniel Tompkins (now ex-Tesseract), this record excelled in every way. From the huge amounts of deep groove to the fascinating use of atmosphere within the music. All the tracks coalesce into a haunting, modern masterpiece. Ones such as "Lament", "Nascent", "April", "Eden", and the six phenomenal parts of "Concealing Fate" stand out especially. After giving this album a good listen it's hard to resist the urge to listen again... and again.
We we're lucky enough to be in the first crowd to ever see this band preform in the U.S. It was shortly before this record struck, but we got an early glimpse of the genius to come. "Dualism" is an absolutely brilliant addition to the archives of heavy music. With the addition of new vocalist Daniël de Jongh to the mix, the band really stepped up to create this work of art. Textures have already earned their place as Progressive Metal gods. This album backed up that position 110%. Huge tracks like "Arms of the Sea", "Singularity", "Reaching Home", and "Sketches from a Motionless Statue" are all reasons why this album is a modern metal classic.
Yet another modern masterpiece comes from New York City's Ever Forthright. Their self-titled debut feels far ahead of it's time. It is a technical mind fuck with serious musicality to boot. There's a very unique, ambitious feel to this record with the inclusion of jazzy segments and mind bending, chaotic, shreddy composition. Chris Baretto (ex-Periphery) even whips out the sax at points when he's not singing / screaming his lungs out. This album has a very addictive quality to it. For example, "All Eyes on Earth", "The Little Albert Experiment", and "Screen Scenarios" will have you hooked. Add it all together and BOOM! You have a classic.
Neo-classical titans, The Human Abstract, came back stronger than ever with their third studio full-length, "Digital Veil". One of the biggest game changers with this record was the return of the classically trained, genius guitar virtuoso A.J. Minette. With his influence, this record took that classical influence and blended it with a very modern, technical sound, making for some insanely good music. "Digital Veil" is filled with aural pleasures and mind bending composition. "Complex Terms", "Digital Veil", "Horizon To Zenith", "Faust", and "Holographic Sight" are some great examples. All in all, "Digital Veil" is a must listen.
To start with... THALL. Needed to get that out of my system. Hailing from Sweden, Vildhjarta's full-length debut "Måsstaden" was one of the most evil, heaviest, strangest metal records ever conceived \m/ It is one helluva experience to say the least. Packing in coldly calculated musical segments with a deadly edge, the sensation of just being surrounded by this unnaturally heavy music is an experience within itself. Some highly recommended tracks include the lethal "Dagger", updated "Traces", heavy edged "All These Feelings", and eeevil "Benblåst". If you managed to miss out on "Måsstaden", you need to get some thall in your life... now.
Californian Death Metal innovators Fallujah were a must for this list with their legendary record, "The Harvest Wombs". This extreme metal experience is easily one of the best to come out in 2011 with it's face smashing edge and impressive display of musical command. Fallujah has the ability to seamlessly transition from heavy as hell Death Metal segments into an explosion of utterly beautiful, inspiring music. There are several "holy shit!" moments on this one. A couple examples can be found in the tracks "Alpha Incipient", "Cerebral Hybridization", "The Flame Surreal", and "Assemblage of Wolves". Highly recommended \m/
After the godly Animals As Leaders debut, the band took a side step that almost no one expected in "Weightless". This album is an experimental tour de force which moved away from their original "djent" influence and brought out amazing results. It's hard to imagine this music was actually written by human beings as it offers a virtuosic detour into previously unexplored grounds of extreme technicality, fusion, and out of the box songwriting. "An Infinite Regression", "Odessa", "Do Not Go Gently", "Isolated Incidents", "Cylindrical Sea", and "Weightless" are just a few of the incredible experiences on this album.
Protest The Hero is a god damn insane band. The high level of talent here is hard to believe. And just like themassive "Fortress", "Scurrilous" delivers on so many fronts. From the seemingly constant shredding and next level musical command from the instrumental corps to the Dio-esque vocals and damn near limitless range of Rody Walker, this record is a mind shattering experience. Among many greats, some favorites include the shreddy "C'est La Vie", "Hair-Trigger", "Sex Tapes", and "Tongue Slipper" with it's hilarious outro (Speak! Ohhh yeeaaah). If you're jonesing for some shred heavy goods, Protest The Hero is sure to satisfy.
The third and longest full-length album from Born of Osiris may also be their best to date. "The Discovery" is a heavy, punishing listening experience filled with shreddy goods and acute technical flair. Not to mention it also has some awesome album artwork! The collision of minds between Lee McKinney, Cameron Losch, and Jason Richardson (ex-Born of Osiris) was a HUGE one. They displayed much growth in their songwriting and execution, cranking out greats such as the visualized perfection of "Recreate", hard hitting "Two Worlds of Design", directional "Follow The Signs", and massive closer "Behold". Follow the signs to The Discovery.
