THROWBACK THURSDAY - HEAVY COVERS

What does one make of cover songs?  It seems like a common response to most covers is, "this is terrible, the original is so much better".  Well obviously!  99 percent of the time a cover is not going to be as great as the original, but it seems to me that many people are not looking at it from the right perspective.  Instead of shitting on a cover song for not being as good as the original, people should really consider how cool it is that a classic song is being covered in the first place.  Heavy metal has its fair share of classics, and they're classics for a reason; they were influential.  Cover songs are interesting to listen to because it gives the listener an opportunity to discover some of the influences of their favorite bands.  Below are a collection of cover songs that I found to be particularly interesting.

1. Upon a Burning Body - 5 Minutes Alone (Pantera Cover)

Pantera is easily one of the most influential metal bands from the 1990's.  5 Minutes Alone is easily one of their crunchiest tunes.  It's only natural that the Texas based deathcore act Upon a Burning Body would cover this song. This is a cover that definitely did the original justice.  And the fact that they gave the late Dimebag Darrell a shout out in the middle of the the song is nothing short of heartwarming.  Check it out!

2. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Paranoid (Black Sabbath Cover)

Boy has this cover gotten shit over the years.  It's understandable; how can The Dillinger Escape Plan cover a Black Sabbath song?  Part of the beauty of this cover comes from the fact that they didn't try to stay true to the original.  Dillinger has their own unique sound and it seems as though they stick to that even while doing covers.  Yeah, it's gonna piss off some old school metal fans but this is a cover definitely worth checking out.

3. Periphery - New Millenium Cyanide Christ (Meshuggah Cover)

Djent dj djent dj djent dj djent djent djent bowww... Well, you know where I'm going with this.  Periphery covering a classic Meshuggah song, how appropriate!  Meshuggah is one of those bands that only comes around once in a life time.  They are responsible for the creation of the sound that is commonly referred to as djent, and Periphery is partially responsible for bringing that sound into the mainstream.  Two great bands, one awesome tone, and one excellent cover!

4. As I Lay Dying - Electric Eye (Judas Priest Cover)

"A Judas Priest cover? The nerve!  These little metalcore kids can't possible cover a song written by the metal gods". - elitist douche.

Yes, Judas Priest is awesome, but so is this cover.  In the contemporary metal scene, As I Lay Dying is one helluva band.  If anyone were to cover a Priest song I'm glad it was them.  As I Lay Dying demonstrates impressive technical skill, and as a whole, they are capable of covering some of the best heavy metal tunes.

5. Children of Bodom - Aces High (Iron Maiden Cover)

If you spit in the air the chances are it's going to land on somebody that's an Iron Maiden fan.  Seriously though, who wasn't influenced by this band?  Just about every power metal and melodic death metal band was, therefore it wouldn't be surprising to hear band that embodies elements from both of those sub-genres cover a classic Maiden tune.  Children of Bodom not only did the original justice with this cover, they made it their own.  The keyboard especially added a nice touch.

6. Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver (Dio Cover)

It takes guts to even decide to record a cover of Dio.  The man's voice is legendary.  Well in 2007 Killswitch Engage pulled it off, successfully.  Obviously no mortal man can top Dio, but Howard Jones did a damn good job as far as cover standards are concerned (and I don't mean that in a condescending way, Howard is an excellent vocalist).  The cover was very well received by critics and fans, and six years later Killswitch is still playing it live.  I can't speak for the masses, but I hope it helped to turn the younger generation of metal heads onto the classic metal act that is Dio.

"THE ABOUT THAT LIFE TOUR" AT CHAIN REACTION LIVE REVIEW / INTERVIEW WITH DANNY LEAL FROM UPON A BURNING BODY

Attila is currently on the road touring off of their newest album release, “About That Life”, with their tour mates, Upon A Burning Body, IWRESTLEDABEARONCE, The Plot In You, and Fit For a King. I got a chance to catch the seventh show of this thirty date nationwide tour… and this was my experience.

Right from the beginning, it was obvious that this was a sold out show and I didn’t need to see the “Sold Out” sign in the front to determine that. As soon as I walked into the venue, people were body-to-body in just about every place except the slight opening for the pathway to the exit. Within seconds, sweat began to roll down my face from the heat generated from a couple hundred of pumped metal heads engaging in the festivities.

The first band to storm the stage that night was Dallas Texas’s Christian metal band Fit For A King. Personally I had only heard of this band but I never actually took a second to check them out and mannnnnnn now I wish I would have. This band puts on a high energy performance with very clean and precise musical talent. This is no doubt a band that I am going to keep my eye on because I think in the next couple of years they are going to blow up the scene.

Next, The Plot In You handled their business and they were entertaining as hell. The highlight of their performance was the intensity of their front man, Landon Tewers who is indeed a performer of the highest caliber. He expressed his passion by continuously moving all across the stage and by doing so he effortlessly kept the overall intensity of the room at a high level. I had never seen this band live before and I definitely recommend it on the account of just a visually energetic show.

Due to sitting down and chatting with Danny Leal for a exclusive interview and needed to get some fresh air I wasn’t able to catch IWRESTLEDABEARONCE’s performance, but based off of the craziness that I could hear pounding through the venue walls, I have no doubt that they had a elite performance as well.

Next up was the band we were there for. As soon as Upon A Burning Body hit the stage the crowd responded just as any band would want their fans to. Within seconds people were climbing onto the stage and diving on the crowd of screaming fans that were bouncing in synchronization while yelling the song lyrics as passionately as they could. This venue, unlike so many others in Southern California, offers an intimate experience because there are no security guards and no barricades that keep the crowd at a distance from the band. By the end of Upon A Burning Body’s set at least twenty people must have jumped onstage, including a female who rolled onstage, just before the exploding bass of a breakdown, and got tangled in Danny’s microphone completely messing up the rhythm of the song. Danny’s reply was something to the extent of, “Wow you just completely fucked that up…. You better make it up with an epic stage dive as soon as the music kicks in,” Which of course she did.

1. Showtime
2. Intermission
3. Devil's Advocate
4. Mimic
5. El Mariachi
6. Desperado
7. Once Upon a Time in Mexico
8. Game Over
9. Texas Blood Money
10. Sin City

Lastly the tour head liner, Attila, performed and if you have ever seen Attila before then you know that their show is always fun. Say what you want about their music, but their performances are a blast and it was very easy to see that Atilla was the band that the majority of the crowd was waiting to see. From middle fingers in the air, to screaming Fronz’s funny and somewhat controversial lyrics the crowd was going nuts. The moisture in the venue from heat was so strong that Fronz was having a difficult time keeping his balance on the metal risers that were on the stage. Attila played a wide variety of songs from multiple albums and when they attempted to end the night with “Callout” the crowd wasn’t ready to go home and by their chanting of “One more song!,” Attila came back to the stage and closed it up with a crowd favorite, “Payback.”

UPON A BURNING BODY "TEXAS BLOOD MONEY" MUSIC VIDEO

Texas Deathcorians Upon A Burning Body recorded and released a music video from their Warped Tour exploits in The Lonestar State. "Texas Blood Money" is the spiritual sequel to the heavy party anthem "Intermission" found on their debut, "The World Is Ours". From the east to the south, this track has been rocking from their latest record, "Red. White. Green.". This video pushes in that point by showing off a damn party on the stage and in the crowd. And I'm sure there was an after party to match.

So go ahead and check the video along with some more recent tracks from Upon A Burning Body below!

Also, our man Marcus (aka \m/eyer) just covered a show headlined by these guys and interviewed their vocalist Danny Leal. So more on that coming soon!

UPON A BURNING BODAY "SIN CITY" MUSIC VIDEO

Deathcore stars Upon A Burning Body just dropped a music video for the track "Sin City" from their latest effort "RED.WHITE.GREEN." It's a live video bringing all the energy from a UABB show and some. Expect heavy breaks and huge riffs as you jam the video along with some other burning tracks below.

I gotta say from personal experience UABB shows are fun as hell. Still remember when they absolutely ripped apart The Championship in PA. Best part was when they were playing their drinking song "Intermission". The bassist Ruben and I looked each other directly in the eye and exchanged middle fingers on the lyric "to hell with you!" Good times haha.
