There's never been doubt that Protest The Hero is a band with big time personality and it really shines through in just about everything they do... puppets included. Yes, I said puppets.
Protest The Hero just released the first official music video (if you honestly believe "Clarity" and "A Life Embossed" were merely lyric videos) in support of their brand new album "Volition" (read our review here). But in case you haven't gathered, it's not so much a music video as it is a puppet show. A puppet show that ties in thematically with the actual song, which criticizes a certain niche of the music industry and the "artists" involved.
Unfortunately if you're here just for the song, this isn't the way to go as it cuts in and out a lot. If you're here for some PTH entertainment, however, go ahead and watch below.
Protest The Hero certainly built up some major hype this year. The
super talented five-piece made news all over the place when they threw
crowdfunding into the eyes of the metal community when their Indiegogo
campaign smashed through its goal of $125,000 in a day, and finished with a huge sum of $341,146. Their success helped contribute to the recent metal band crowd funding trend in a big way.
In
the absence of their drummer Moe Carlson, who left the band,
Chris Adler (Lamb of God) filled in and brought his drum style
that,
according to PtH, added a much more metal vibe to the new record. Since
then, they've found a new full-time replacement in Mike Ieradi of The
Kindred aka Today I Caught The Plague.
All the events above (minus the very last) were the steps leading up to an absolute success. "Volition" is a triumph on all fronts. Everything about this album wreaks of true greatness, if not perfection. If any members of the band happen to be reading this, pat yourself on the back right fucking now.
Where to start? They take the best elements of "Fortress", "Scurrilous", and "Kezia", blend them together with a few new ingredients, and serve directly to your ears. If that doesn't sound like a good time, I can't help you.
The instrumentation brought on "Volition" is eargasmic. The guitar work will make your jaw drop. The drumming will make your jaw drop again. And thanks to superior production / mixing, the bass might just make your jaw drop thrice. Put them all together and your jaw doesn't stand a chance. The sheer amount of mind bending technical shred a found on this album is damn near overwhelming. Carefully crafted, intelligent composition lines every second of this musical juggernaut. With content aplenty, it's a great album for willing ears to explore. Songs like "Skies", "Without Prejudice", "Clarity", "Drumhead Trial", "Mist" and so on are worth melting your brain onto.
And of course Rody Walker kills it. You may scoff, but he's always kinda reminded me of Dio (especially with past songs like "C'est La Vie"). Rody's voice carries undeniable power with every note released. You'll find his sung melodies carved into your head throughout the day. And his lyrics are always great. The topics covered range from being serious ("Plato's Tripartite" and "Tilting Against Windmills") to lighthearted (Star Wars vs Star Trek in the single "Clarity"). There's even a song about dogs ("A Life Embossed"). There's never been doubt that Protest The Hero is a band with big time personality and it really shines through. There are also several vocal cameos from Jadea Kelly, Kayla Howran, Mark Iannelli, and many more.
The three singles released "Clarity", "Drumhead Trial", and "A Life Embossed" really helped carve the path up to this album's release by giving a good, summarized idea of what to expect. But as usual, the summary doesn't do the full story justice. Every single second of this record is worth your full attention. There is no filler content to be found as every track hits with the force of an atomic bomb. Press play at your own risk.
I honestly don't have any real criticisms of this album. It's just damn near perfect, if not perfect. You know what... I'm just gonna go ahead and give Protest The Hero a 10 out of 10. It's an overall rock solid effort from a rock solid band (and the people who support them). Allow me to reiterate... "Volition" is a total triumph. And for those of you who missed it, it's now streaming in it's entirety. Look above and blast that! And if you enjoy the music half as much as we do, do yourself a favor and grab yourself a new CD here.

It's official. ERRA has returned! Their new album "Augment" was released today via Tragic Hero Records and it's absolute madness. Protest The Hero just dropped a brand new lyric video for the track "A Life Embossed"! Musically, this one hits hard (shocker there, right?). Thematically, I'll let the singer Rody Walker explain...

“The boys in PTH are long time dog lovers, it has come to our attention that there’s injustice afoot! Our home of Ontario Canada is the largest territory in all the world to pass legislation that discriminates against a specific breed of dog. This is a worldwide issue that the band is incredibly disturbed by. The song and video for “A Life Embossed” attempts to draw much needed attention to an issue that affects all dog lovers alike”

However... it appears as if the album is being received early by select fans (aka those who pledged towards the incredibly successful crowd funding campaign. If you're one of those people, check your e-mail.)
After parting ways with drummer Moe Carlson and recording their latest record with Lamb of God's Chris Adler, there has been yet another development on Protest The Hero's percussion front. The band has officially taken on Mike Ieradi of The Kindred (previously known as Today I Caught The Plague) as a full-time member of the band.
You can read statements below from both the band and Mike Ieradi pertaining to the line-up change. The Kindred have yet to officially comment though Mike will remain a part of that band for now, playing two sets on their upcoming tour with Protest The Hero.

“Finding a new drummer has proven to be a tough task! We had interest and video submissions from many friends, fans, and family alike (yes, Choadie’s mom sent in a video of her ripping “c’est la vie!”). Every single one of those submissions was wonderful – but we realized it was going to be impossible to select a drummer based on a youtube video. We needed someone who we knew. Someone who we thought we wouldn’t want to murder and leave at the side of the road two weeks into tour. We think we have found that person in Mike Ieradi – a Canadian fella we met many moons ago. (his life depends on this working out…)
What’s that you say? Mike is already in another band? Yes, he is. He will be playing in 2 bands on this upcoming tour. He will be opening with his band The Kindred and will then wrap the night up playing with us. Despite pulling double duty on this tour, he IS the newest member of pth and will hopefully be with us until we hang up the old jazz picks. No pressure Mike!
When we asked Mike to write up a blurb about this, he gave us attitude and two fingers in the air. This is a good sign for him fitting in with us guys.
After heavy editing, it sounded something like this:
“Hey everyone! Mike Ieradi here, and happy to announce my new role in Protest the Hero. I’m excited to be a full blown member of a great band with some great friends, and looking forward to the future with these gorgeous hunks. Stoked to see everyone out on this upcoming tour, and I hope you enjoy watching me sweat my way through two sets with Protest and The Kindred. It should be a fun one!”
Prepare your earholes. There's a new song from Protest The Hero on the loose! Through "Drumhead Trial", the band expands upon their signature, shred worthy sound in a way that becomes more and more addicting listen after listen. My advice? Get addicted.
Protest The Hero's fourth studio album is set to release October 29th. As the anticipation steadily grows, it's looking to be one of the most noteworthy metal releases of this year. Check our official Album Preview here for much more info on the album. Also be sure to check the tracks.
For once... Europe gets one of the best tours! Protest The Hero will be hitting the continent in January with the best support possible - Two European heavyweights, Tesseract and The Safety Fire along with Canada's very own Intervals hitting Europe for the first time! This is probably going to be the best tour of 2014 and it's taking place in January! You better not miss this unbelievable combo and I personally guarantee you're not dreaming... this is really happening!
Protest The Hero just dropped a brand new lyric video if you really want to call it that... I'd call it a music video with the lyrics thrown in for shits n giggles. And I'd call it an awesome, hilarious video at that.
The "Clarity" video digs up the age old nerd debate of Star Trek vs Star Wars. And you better believe Han shot first. Watch the madness down below and keep an eye out for the epic twist at the end. Things may get nerdier than you expect.

Remember when Protest the Hero threw crowdfunding into the eyes of all of metal when their Indiegogo campaign smashed through its goal of 125,000 in a day, and finished just under a huge sum of 350,000? Remember when they announced that in the absence of their drummer, who left the band, Chris Adler filled in and brought with him his drum style that, according to PtH, added a much more metal vibe to the new record? Remember when, seemingly in spite of the successful Indiegogo campaign, Protest the Hero signed licensing deals with multiple record labels to distribute and promote their new album. Remember when 6 months passed since the successful Indiegogo campaign and still no details surfaced about the album? Of course you do, and finally, we have the details we’ve been craving.
Protest the Hero’s extremely highly anticipated 4th studio album will be titled “Volition” and will be released October 29th. In November, the band will embark on a world tour in support of their new album. The multiple licensing deals that the band has signed will allow “Volition” to be distributed all over physically and digitally. Here’s to it being on Spotify, please. Keep an eye out for more details surrounding this one, and hopefully, soon, new music.
Here's some sad, yet somewhat interesting news. Protest The Hero have unfortunately parted ways with long time drummer Moe Carlson. He left with the intention of furthering his eduction, so you don't have to worry about any drama. They've always been a rock solid musical unit, having played together since a considerably young age. The chemistry was always there in abundance. This is more than evident from their three albums thus far.
Recently, as many of you know, the band had a very successful crowd funding campaign with the intention of going independent for their fourth album. They raised an insane $341,146, well surpassing their original $125,000 goal. You can read more about that right here. Since then, fans have been expectantly waiting for more godly Prog Metal material from Protest The Hero.
And wham... Moe Carlson is gone... So where do they do from here? Turns out Lamb of God's Chris Adler will be filling the void left by Moe as a studio member. This is an interesting choice considering Moe and Chris are much different drummers technically speaking. One can only speculate how this will affect the records outcome.
While we're all waiting for that answer, you can check the official statements from Protest The Hero and Chris Adler down below. You can also read an interview with Moe Carlson here. There's also some classic PTH goods for you to blast under everything else. Stay tuned for more.

“We know we have been silent for the past couple months while we record this beast, but we assure you it’s almost done and is turning out extremely well. We plan on releasing our beloved “pupdates” throughout the summer while we set up to release this new album so stay tuned for that.
With all this incredible progress, however, we have some sad news. Our brother and friend Moe has decided to leave the band to go back to school in pursuit of some of his other passions. When our gruelling studio schedule just wouldn’t work with his gruelling school schedule, we realized we would need to find a session player for the new album. With Moe‘s guidance and approval, we found us a nice match in Chris Adler! Having known Chris for a few years, and with he and Moe being drum-buddies, it seemed like a perfect fit. We are happy to say that Chris has already come and gone from canada and has left us with some beautiful drum tracks. Can’t wait for you all to hear it!” - Protest The Hero
“I was thrilled to get the call to join up and help out my friends in Protest, how could I turn down one of my favorite bands? I’ve done a bit of session work before with Testament and Ron Jarzombek but nothing this immersive. I lived and breathed this record for 8 weeks and even lived in Toronto for a month with the guys. The experience was intense tosay the least. Some of the most demanding and intricate drum work of my career. I’m very proud to have been a part of the Protest family and can’t wait to have you hear it.” - Chris Adler

Here is the final installment of our most anticipated releases for 2013. This is a list of five
bands with upcoming albums / EPs that will most likely land in 2013.
We've also included the most recent music / announcements from each
group, whether from upcoming or past releases. Let us know your most anticipated releases!
"Can you believe that we've
been a band for 13 years and counting? We've finally decided to take
matters into our own hands and want to raise money for the album
directly from the people who have helped keep this band going all these
years. In this time, we've release 3 full length albums, a live DVD/CD,
as well as an EP and a 7 inch. We've toured all over the world (but
still wanting to check off more destinations and visit more places) and
pretty much lived and breathed this band as long as we've been in
existence.
We are finally free from all obligations and want to
be in control of our “careers”. In general, the record industry is
backwards and we'd be stupid to renegotiate with anyone at this time.
Crowdfunding seems to be something that's working. Whether or not this
is the next thing for the music industry, it's a way that supporters of a
band can know exactly where their hard earned dollars are going. No
middlemen, no commissions, no bullshit."
That's right! There's a new Protest The Hero record on the way and they're going independent. The band is aiming to raise $125,000... they've already raised $150,000+ in less than a day... That's what I call a committed fan base! You can still chip in some money right here. There's all kinds of perks that come with your support ranging from getting a digital download of the album (boring....) to having a pizza party with the band! Or making them cover whatever song you like in whatever style you like! Or even BEING ON THE ALBUM. Sound appealing? Cough up the dough within the next 30 days. In the mean time watch the band's announcement video for laughs and clips of amazing music. We also included some PTH classics under that. Enjoy!
