THROWBACK THURSDAY - NEVERMORE

I don't know how many times I have come across old school metalheads who hate grunge.  It's just a common phenomena that I've grown to accept. It's understandable too. As soon as bands like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains became popular, record labels everywhere were trying to cash in on this sound. It did in fact have an effect on heavy metal at that time, as some labels were trying to pursue thrashers to step in the direction of flannel wearing sensitive rockers. Some groups gave into the pressure while others laughed at these suggestions and continued to thrash their fingers off.

Needless to say, by the early 90's glam metal was on its death bed, much of the thrash metal community was divided, and extreme metal was pushed way into the underground. Sanctuary, a thrash band from Seattle, was one of the divided. While some group members considered "grunging" up their thrash sound, vocalist Warrel Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard opposed this change and decided to leave the band. After recruiting Jeff Loomis for guitar duties, Nevermore was born. So, in away, the grunge movement unintentionally and indirectly gave us one of the greatest thrash bands of the 1990s.

Nevermore truly had a unique sound.  Overall, the sound seemed to arouse feelings of darkness, dread, anger, and even anxiety.  This was especially prevalent on albums such as "Dead Heart in a Dead World" and "Dreaming Neon Black" (two crucial albums for any metal heads collection). Musically they were very much a thrash metal band, but they adopted elements of progressive metal such as technical riffing and non-standard song structures, as well as power metal, particularly in the operatic vocals of Dane.  Elements of groove metal came into play after Loomis adopted the use of seven-string guitars. Oh and their ballads, damn their ballads were disturbingly beautiful! I think I mentioned something a while back about how Shadows Fall writes some of the best contemporary metal ballads, and while I still hold onto that claim, I must say that Nevermore did them just as good if not better. Something about the slowed down neo-classical stylings of Jeff Loomis meshed perfectly with the emotionally distraught lyrics of Warrel Dane in these songs.

On the topic of lyrics, their songs were always serious, and oftentimes seemingly pessimistic.  The entire "Dreaming Neon Black" album was about a man's descent into madness after losing a loved one.  Critiques of religion were recurring as well as scathing commentaries about our political system, and unlike some thrash metal vocalists (names don't need to be named), these lyrics never came off as sounding cheesy. In other words, Nevermore was not the type of band that one could just write off as being generic thrash.

Although Nevermore is currently on hiatus, it's worth your time to go back and listen to their older releases.  "Dead Heart in a Dead World" is usually on my periodic rotation list of music. Listen to either this album or "Dreaming Neon Black" (or any of their albums honestly) on an overcast day for a true aesthetic experience. And just like the old saying goes, "the cynic's favorite band isn't Cynic, it's Nevermore".

THROWBACK THURSDAY - EUROBLAST 8

The thing that sucks about living in States is that Europe gets all the great shows. And the problem with living in Europe is that the US gets all the great shows. If you catch my drift... You can't win either way.

For this reason I did not personally attend Euroblast 8 but there's no denying the line-up was insanely good. There was also an incredible tour alongside the main event with Scar Symmetry among others. So today we're gonna be taking a look back at some of the incredible sets that were played at the main festival itself along with prepping you for this year's Euroblast 9.

Euroblast 8 was stacked with names like After The Burial, Tesseract, Jeff Loomis, War From A Harlots Mouth, Vildhjarta, Skyharbor, Chimp Spanner, Monuments, Circle of Contempt, The Algorithm, Agent Fresco, Destiny Potato, and the list goes on... Check out footage from the bands down below! Also included possibly one of the coolest festival trailers ever made, featuring music from the incredible Akeldama.

Currently the line-up for this years festival is being announced bit by bit. There have already been several awesome bands announced including Benea Reach, Mnemic, Twelve Foot Ninja, The Omega Experiment, Cyclamen, Tardive Dyskinesia, etc. You can check the rest of the bands / get all kinds of info here. This years festival will be huge!

GEAR STOLEN - JEFF LOOMIS

Well another metal legend has had his gear stolen. This time its shredder Jeff Loomis and his accomplices in The Jeff Loomis Band. This seems to be happening a lot recently and it’s quite unfortunate that already financially struggling metalheads are hindered even further by common thievery. Laptops, cell-phones, passports, cash, cameras, and of course musical equipment were among the stolen items. It occurred on Monday in St. Louis, but we figured it's still worth spreading the word even after the fact.

Loomis is looking to continue the current tour and is asking for donations to help fund the band’s recovery. It’s a shame that something like this would happen and if you feel inclined to help I’m sure it would be much appreciated. HERE is the link to Jeff Loomis’ statement and paypal. You can also check the band’s merch and iTunes if that’s how you wanna help. Grab some new music in case you haven’t gotten a chance to listen and help the band!

JEFF LOOMIS AND KEITH MERROW WRITING AN ALBUM!

Damn straight! Two of the world's premiere guitar masters are putting their minds together on a full-length album. The legendary Jeff Loomis and Keith Merrow will officially collide. Expect total shredding domination and spontaneous combustion of several human brains across the globe. Shred heads beware. While you're waiting for the greatness to unfold, check out two Merrow tracks featuring Loomis solos and a single from Jeff Loomis himself. This is what Keith Merrow had to say about the project:

"Very excited to let you all know, Jeff Loomis and I have decided that we’ll be doing an album together. We’ve been talking about it for a while, and it just seems right. So, we’ll start writing some new music for that, soon. I’m extremely motivated by the thought of this, and I know that the chemistry between the musical ideas we have will make for a truly amazing album. Be stoked. I’m stoked!

So, our “jam” today was mostly about this collab, and also practicing for a performance at NAMM together. I know some of you were hoping for a new video, or a a bunch of pics… but, there will be plenty of that in the future. Count on it :)"

EUROBLAST 8 - AFTER THE BURIAL AND CIRCLE OF CONTEMPT ADDED

To anyone going to this festival, you're a lucky bastard. Euroblast is the kind of event that would make me consider moving to another continent for good if I had the money. It is the prog-metal festival of dreams. Euroblast 8's line up is beyond ridiculous. Featuring acts like Animals as Leaders, Scar Symmetry, Tesseract, Jeff Loomis, Vildhjarta, Monuments, Sybreed, Skyharbor, Chimp Spanner, Scale the Summit, Uneven Structure, Long Distance Calling, The Algorithm, Red Seas Fire, Stealing Axion, and Akeldama among many others. And with the recent addition of After the Burial and Circle of Contempt this show is looking better than ever. If you live nearby, it should be considered a crime not to attend. If you don't live in Europe and don't have money to travel, you should be jealous... like me. The 3 day festival kicks off October 19th, 2012 in Cologne, Germany. Watch the awesome trailer featuring an exclusive Akeldama clip below.
